I took it my passenger axle and suddenly all the fluid starts pouring out. The car was too low and i couldnt make it in time to place a towel in it. Now its all over the floor and i was wandering if that is normal?
Another vent: my thread in hub for my brake caliper to go in is effed up and all i did was replace my pads and now its not going in right. tilted instead. My Celica is cursed. This post has been edited by My2Celi: Nov 24, 2006 - 6:06 PM -------------------- <--- I miss :'' (

Ya, I think that's normal. When my mechanic replaced my cv boots up front, just after removing the boots, a good bit of tranny fluid came out... maybe a quart or two.
:'( my precious Synchomesh (not even 6 months old).. regular engine oil was used to replace the stuff that came out... sigh.. This post has been edited by Starcraftjunkie: Nov 21, 2006 - 10:25 PM |

did either of you drain the tranny fluid first ...? you know the axles go into the tranny and when they come out, so does the fluid...

the first time i took out my axle nothing came out, this time it did. So now i know its a normal thing. I might have not put enough tranny fluid the first time i change my tranny. How do you know if your seal might be bad or not?

In the Chilton's guide, it told me to undo the fill valve on the front of the tranny and stick my finger in to see if the fluid level came up to right below the hole. Just becareful because the threads in the fill hole are kind of sharp.
I broke my seal when I changed my passenger axle, and the fluid kept coming out once I put in the new axle. Not at the rate it did when the axle came out, but just a slow leak. The seal was harder to change than the axle itself. |

QUOTE(My2Celi @ Nov 22, 2006 - 12:58 PM) i used a crowbar to take out the seal. but im when i installed it im not sure if its all the way in so i took a rubber hammer and taped it lightly. FLUID: Starcraftjunkie and Battman722 are correct about replacing the fluid when removing the axle. Last time you jacked up the vehicle you may have had enought tilt to retain the fluid from pouring out from the axle hole, either that or you were running it without enough fluid. SEALS The axle seal should be installed to look like the other axle. I would recommend changing the seal when you replace an axle. You can't always tell if a seal is bad by looking. The rubber becomes hard and reinstalling the axle may permanently push it out of shape so it leaks. Just replace them when you already have the axels removed. The price of the seal is not much compared the hassle of finding that the seal leaks after you have reassembled everything. AMOUNT OF FLUID: Remember have the car level to check the amount of transmission fluid. xelan is right "undo the fill valve on the front of the tranny and stick my finger in to see if the fluid level came up to right below the hole. Just becareful because the threads in the fill hole are kind of sharp." CHECK OTHER PARTS: I would also recommend checking your cv boots for cracks at this time as well. If they are brittle and have slight cracks you might as well replace them also. When they split open, they spew out grease everywhere and then it's only a very short time before the joint fails due to lack of lubrication. Axle repair manual link Best of luck, Yellow94GT |

I just went to Advance Auto for the axle seals. There was only one part number for either side, or state it another way the passenger and driver's side are the same. The BOOTS are inner and outer. The seals are the same (there is not inner or outer seal). The seals fit in the openings in the transmission where the axles can be inserted. Yellow94GT |

Actually I did mine in September. My outer cv joint boots were cracked. I cleaned and re greased all four joints replaced the boots and replaced the axle seals while I had the axles out. It really helps to find a knowledgeable parts supplier, either that or do all the parts research yourself so any ignorant parts people can't mess up your maintenance projects. The guys at Advance Auto had the seals in stock. They were only $6.88 each (much less than my local Toyota dealership) with a year replacement warrantee. My local Toyota dealer only had "kits" that included parts I didn't need. Best of luck, Yellow94GT |
