For you guys with the Gen II GTE, do you have a circuit wired up for your fuel pump to prime for 2-3 seconds with initial key on engine off??? I've noticed that on a cold start my car has a mofo of a time starting and I can't hear the pump prime or anything. Car has to try to suck fuel through the system to get it going and it sucks. I never bothered to notice before if (when stock) the pump was wired for a prime or not when the key was initially flicked on, but it sure doesn't now and makes for difficult cold starts.
Any help would be appreciated. Trying to get the last couple little things straightened out on the car. -------------------- |

when you say hell of a time cold starting do you mean it takes a lot of cranks and then fires up first try, or doeds it fire up, die, then fire up, die, then finally fire up and stay starting?
if this is your problem then its probably your cold start time injector switch, 21 or 22mm sensor on the coolant neck, behind the coolant temp sensor for the ecu. mr2.noegruts.com has a picture of the coolant neck if you need it. |

It doesn't long crank at all, but it will BARELY stay running, chugging and lugging right at the point of stalling out, then after maybe 3-5 seconds tops it'll catch and idle up to a cold idle like normal. Sometimes though it will die and will take one or two more times of this process and then it'll fire up like normal. I completely forgot about the colt start injector. So you're saying there's a switch for this?? Any way to troubleshoot that?? Would it throw a code?? I presume it's in the BGB, could anyone post up a scan or something possible if there is a diagnosis procedure? Thanks Brian, I do appreciate the response. -------------------- |

it would not a throw a code.
it is a temperature sensor that basically tells the cold start injector to fire when the coolant is a certain temperature. if it is broken then the cold start injector will not fire and you will have issues starting a cold motor. when the coolant is cold enough the switch grounds out and that tells the ecu to fire the cold start injector. to test it, the only way to test it that i can think of is to ground out the ground wire on the sensor (i think its green, check the wiring diagram) as that will trick the ecu in to firing the cold start injector, if this works repalce that sensor. junkyards usually sell them for 5$ though so not many people try and test it. edit: sounds like your cold start injector to me, the switch is the most common fault. Got a part number for that by chance?? I'll just buy a new one and pass on the risk of junkyard parts. I've been digging around MR2OC and seen that it's a normal occurrence, especially with the JDM swaps for some reason. But, I haven't found a part number over there.

Sean,
You know, as I started reading this thread, I remembered that your cold start injector switch is in fact broken. I completely forgot to tell you! It's very common when the 3SGTEs get shipped. A new one should take care of the problem. -Doc This post has been edited by Dr_Tweak: Nov 29, 2006 - 3:46 PM -------------------- -Dr Tweak, 6GC's resident engine swap wiring expert extraordinaire Click here to see my swaps drtweak@phoenixtuning.com |

the sensor is like 130 new, id search mr2oc for a part number, but as doc just posted you might want to change out your cold start injector

Ok, so the cold start INJECTOR and NOT the timing switch is broken. Anyone got a part number for that? -------------------- |

switch or injector? lol
the switch is a very common problem. a lot of the times they break or just go bad. i replaced mine with a junk yard switch and never had starting problems again. its also a good idea to inspect your coolant temp sensor (right next to the switch). -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

what i am hearing is that the switch is broken not the injector, the switch is on the coolant neck the injector is under the throttle body i believe.
as lagos said, a 5$ junk yard switch will do fine, if you are hell bent on spending 130$ ill go get you like 5 junk yard ones and still profit hahaha. |

Yeah.......for $20 if I can find a junkyard sensor, I'll use that and pay for it 5 times over again. If 5 of them last me more than a couple of years I'd be happy. Going to make some calls tomorrow and see if I can't locate one.

yes its the same sensor on any 5s motor, this is why they are easy to find and only cost 5$ at most junk yards.
6th gen celicas, mid 90's camrys, 5th gen celicas, non turbo mr2's , all have 5sfe |

they are not 100% the same. the part number is a little different and their resistance is spec'd a little differently in the bgb, but they seem to work just fine in our cars. at least thats how the one i have is.

It's a 22mm sized sensor on the thermostat neck right next to the water temp sensor. The CSI TS is the closest one to the head. Culpable04, where in NJ are you?
