Hi all, I bought a Japanese imported Celi GT earlier this year -car of my dreams. The rear spoiler looks different from the UK spec Celis as it hasn't got the middle support.

Reading the forums, i'm confused about what a hatchback or a coupe looks like - are they the same shape?

Yep, mine sure does look like the gleaming black car - so that is not a coupe but a hatchback as pictured - which means if it's your car, you need to amend your details to a 94 hatchback.

your spoiler looks different because it has the 3-post spoiler that came on 96+ hatchback models. the 94-95 models, such as dee-no's celi, came with 2-post spoiler.

hatchback:

coupe:

That makes no sense, especially in British English. All 6g celicas are coupés. A coupé is a car with 2 or 2+2 seats (where the +2 indicates occasional passengers or children).

I agree with the first picture - that is a Hatchback (or Liftback) Coupé. The second picture is of a Fastback/Notchback Coupé.

As an aside, the difference between a 2-door Sedan/Saloon and a Coupé is the amount of rear accomodation. If the 2-door model offers at least 33 cubic feet / 0.934 m³ / 934 litres of rear accomodation then it is classified as a 2-door Sedan/Saloon. Otherwise, it is classified as a coupé.

When searching members rides I noticed lots of gt-4s listed as coupes.
It helps in that aspect to have it correctly identifed.

In Japan UK and all of them other places over seas, To them they are all coupes. But here in the US. the top two pictures are coupe and hatchback. hatchback is like my car and coupe is like a curren. But thats only known in the US. Other countries over seas say it differently.

What i have understood is that the hatchbacks have rearwindow in the trunklid. Thats what i have heard. Not 100% sure but it still makes sence cos like 6gc coupes dont have it that way.

Yes your correct in the US a hatchback is called a hatchback because it has a rear hatch. and a coupe is called a coupe because it has a trunk.

the difference between hatch and coupe is the rear door. in a hatch u can access the interior from the rear. in a coupe u can not.

but the point is that when u are refering to a celica coupe outside US u are refering to a car that doesnt excists. only in JDM there is something somewhow similar to the US coupe but is not a celica. its a curren. all Euro and JDM celicas are hatch.

and i read from a thread here that Toyota didn't make any "coupe" models in 1999, only hatchbacks (from first pic). so if you wanted a lexus-lookalike rear end (2nd pic), it'll have to be pre98.

Physical difference is because the hatch is a rear door, while the coupe has a trunk. Tails are different with possible wing options. Everything else is pretty much the same.
