Maybe the synchronizors (if thats how you spell it) are shot to hell... basically they guide the shifter into gear. Thats all that i can think of. good luck

Try to shift into reverse and slightly let go of the clutch but not all the way.

Synchro gears dont really "guide" the shifter into gear, but are secondary gears attached to the main gear that "synchronize" the shifting by speeding up that gear to match the engine speed. Essentially the same as double clutching.

Worn synchros wouldnt be the case for reverse though, as the reverse gear is a straight cut gear (no synchro). That is why if your car is rolling a bit and you try to put it into reverse it will sometimes grind.

Does it go into 5th OK? I have a similar problem
whith my ae92 tranny except its 3rd grinding and 4th won't
go in at all. Mine will go into 3rd at an Idle 50% of the time
or so and forth is completely blocked out. I am going to
check out the linkage on the tranny, oil level ect tommorow.
I pulled my shifter already and checked my cables.

i took it to a tranny place, for a free diagnostic. he said that he's thinking its something in the tranny maybe a broken syncro, a friend of mine that owns a shop said that the same thing happened to his evo but it was his 2nd gear and he told me my syncro may have gotten jammed in the reverse gear.

im going to have the guy pull the tranny out (doc said its a used tranny and dosent know the mileage) and have him rebuild it throw in an lsd and a lightweight flywheel while he's at it what do you guys think?

If i were you, i'd upgrade to a better/stronger tranny before you start rebuilding etc..

Yup, just sold some mint condition ones to rzanology for cheap. rolleyes.gif tongue.gif

They are a high demand product, and unfortunately many junk yards cut them when messing with the motor etc... And when people have them for sale here they go really fast -- i had about 3 other people wanting mine. laugh.gif But, if i were you, I’d hit the junk yards around you and see what you can find. Good luck.
