does the alternator charge the battery at idle? i need a high output alternater, but the ones ive found are 200-300 price range. im looking for something cheaper and was thinking about using a turbo timer to charge the battery for me. anyone know of a dirt cheap turbo timer or do it yourself instructions, just need the car to run for a couple minutes after i get out.
was kicking around the idea of a relay and capacitor to keep the ignition on, but im not sure how to wire the ignition to stay on without the key This post has been edited by Stu37363: Feb 4, 2007 - 12:03 PM |

your ign wires will be found at your key. solid white is your constant 12v. black with red and black with orange are your ign and/or acc. its been a while since i installed my turbo timer. if you want to be able to install this without cutting your factory ign harness. get a blitz 94-98 supra turbo timer harness it will plug into your factory harness so you can cut into the splice harness. make sense? hope this helps!

yeah you should be able to just cut the acc and keep the ign wire hot. now that i think about it you might have 2 ign wires and 1 acc wire. i honestly cant remember. maybe sometime tonight ill go out to the garage and look at my celi. its tore apart anyways.

sounds to me like you need a new battery because your old one isn't holding the charge.

sounds like the problem i had with my "dying" alt. when I first installed my sound system I ran it off the stock alternator. the overload of current draw eventually killed my alt. Whenever I turned up subs, I would have to let my car idle to "charge" the battery before I turned it off.
The alt had enough power to run the car/system/acc but it didnt produce enough power to charge my batt properly. |

if you buy a new alt, try to get one from an automatic GT. the autos have an 80amp alt, while manuals have a 70amp one.

just get your old one rebuilt. its cheaper than buying a new oe one, and if you get it rebuilt, you can make it higher output.
my mechanic redid mine, and made the rotor/stator larger (more Cu) and i now have a ~115A output alt. |

wow you guys really force your opinions on people... hes said his alt works fine, but yet you insist he replace it. I may be wrong but i just wanted to point that out.
Hope your finding the correct solution for your situation stu37363 -------------------- 94' ST Coupe - 5sfe Motor swap and brake swap.

Hope your finding the correct solution for your situation stu37363 yeah, im still thinking of cheaper solutions for now, my dad is an electrical engineer, and hes going to help me design something (he said i should just get a new alternator and battery too, but i dont have the money yet). going to run some tests to see if the alt even charges enough at idle to bother doing this. if it doesnt do what i want i may still have some 5 dollar turbo timer design for you guys on a budget. 6g, how much was it to get the alt rewound for higher output? Hope your finding the correct solution for your situation stu37363 because its pretty clear that his charging system or battery has an issue. a turbo timer is not going to help this in any way. Stu37363, take your alt off the car, and take it to a local car parts store. they can bench test it for free and tell you if it works. you can also do the same thing with your battery. the store can place a load on the battery and measure the amps its putting out, so its better then any multimeter test. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned
