hey i just joined up, i just picked up a 94 st hatch a few weeks ago, all stock except for the 40 or so hours me and my friend dumped on it repainting it a audi charcoal grey, but really what i was wondering is why the 1.8 in the celica is weaker then some others. my last car before this was a 1997 mazda miata, which was a fun car, it had a 1.8 and it put out 136hp and had a 7300 redline..i mean even a baseline integra put out 140hp..i could never really understand giving a car that looks like this 115hp and redline not even worth reaching...oh well, i still like it and hopeing to knock the power up a bit in the near future

the 7A isn't powerful at all. The only way to get a decent amount of power from this engine is to Turbo it. Exhaust, intake, and header might gain you 5HP combined. The best route to better HP is to swap. Either a 3S-GTE, which would require some work, or and "A" series engine. a 4A-GE would fit easily with "limited" modification. Silvertop or Blacktop 20V would be ideal, but you could always get a 4A-GZE and swap off the supercharger for a Turbo..

Check out the heads on the Integra and Miata, and then compare them to the head on the Celica. You'll notice that the Integra and Miata heads are much wider. This is because the valves sit in at a different angle and that allows for more ease of flow. The 7afe and 5sfe motors are pretty much nicely done SOHC motors. They function the same. My Jetta is a 2.0 SOHC and it puts out the same hp as the 1.8 DOHC in the Celica. Don't even think of swapping heads though, it's a big waste of time and money. It's not like the Honda motors. If you like high red line and screaming power, go with the 4age. Silver top is going ot be the cheapest and best bang for the buck.
EDIT: I still have my 5sfe, and I'm more than happy with it. I've driven Celicas with the 7afe, and I can't say the same for them. This post has been edited by Bigmeanbulldog55: Feb 5, 2007 - 1:07 PM -------------------- Live Free, Be Happy

i say if you want to see what a 7a can do look up nik and his profile i think he is around 320hp to the wheel , but like most motors it is all about how much you want to spend.

actually you CAN swap a G head on the 7afe and make a 7age, but theres alot more involved than just bolting the head on. you need to run some serious engine managment usually, however i think it could be made to work with a G pcm and a piggy back to assist with fueling and timing control.
in the end, a 3sgte swap pans out to be less work and probably cost less. -------------------- |
