When im driving, i hear a loud humming sound coming from the engine bay. I could feel the vibration inside the car as the humming gets louder. It gets louder the faster i drive, so... My guess at first was the wheel bearing, but i lifted the car and wiggled the whee back and forth at 12 and 6 o clock, and there was no play. Sooo my next guess is the Carrier Bearing on the passenger side inner-axel? if a bearing is worn, would it make that humming noise? If it is, is it hard to replace? A little help would be nice, cause the sound is driving me nuts. Thanks guys!

Hope you find the problem. -------------------- 3sgteing.

A engine mount vibration isn't going to be tied to vehicle speed. It will be tied to engine speed....
And it's not going to make a humming noise. A bearing can be bad and have no play. Check the shaft and see if it has any play in it [wiggle the trans end]. Is it from the outside of the car or under the hood? -------------------- |

Is it from the outside of the car or under the hood? Thanks for the help guys... ill see if i could get the car off the ground tommorow. I think the sound is coming from under the hood... I will have my radio on loud and still be able to hear it. I could feel the vibration on the steering wheel at certain speeds, like bet. 20 and 30, Im guessing at higher speeds i will be harder to feel, but i can still hear it. If it is the carrier bearing, do any of you know if it would be hard/expensive to replace? I asked toyota and they said the bearing is $25 so its not that bad, im more concerned about the labor. I would take my own axel off, i would just need to take it to a machine shop. Never had a bearing replaced so i dont know. Thanks again guys i really appricate it! |

IIRC the bearing will just unbolt from the back of the engine block.
I believe there's a C clip holding it in. That will have to be removed. If you don't need a press it will be easy. If you need a press, you will have to find a shop willing to press it out for you. -------------------- |

Most likely the wheel bearing...sometimes you wont feel play in them but they will still grind/howl/make alot of noise. That carrier bearing should take a VERY long time to go bad...it doesnt really carry a load like the wheel bearing does.

[/quote] Not yet, im gonna lift the car up tommorow and replace the axle, i noticed that CV boot on the inside has a slight rip and lost all the grease. Im hoping that's the problem and not the wheel bearing, so its not as expensive. Thanks for the info buffedan, that makes a lot of sense. ill update tommorow when i replace the axle, hopefully it cures the problem. Thanks again |

I replaced the axel today, and it did help the sound, but it is still there, just not as audible. Also, there is sound coming from the pass. side, it sounds as if a rock is bouncing around between the rotor and the dust plate for lack of a better description. It sounds as if a rock got caught in there and is just bouncing around. The boot on the axle was ripped anyway so at least the change was not in vain. But now im narrowing it down to the carrier bearing or the wheel bearing. Any Ideas? The carrier bearing was a little loose but nothing too drastic. How do i check for a worn wheel bearing? Thanks again for your help guys.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Every car I've ever owned has had wheel bearing trouble (except my Celica for some reason) and it sounds to me exactly the same, there was no play in my wheels either..
If you drive your car around a few corners at a half decent speed, you can tell which side's got the bad bearing. Example:- If you go round a right-hander, the car will lean to the left. If the noise is noticably louder, then one of the wheel bearings on the left is shot (as it makes more noise when the load increases). If you drive round a left-hander, the car will lean to the right. If the noise is worse when you do this, then one of the wheel bearings on the right is shot. Say you've got a bad bearing on the right hand side and you go round a right-hand bend in the road, the car will lean to the left and as the load on the right-hand side of the car decreases, the rumbling/humming noise will reduce until you strighten up again. I've used this method a few times to determine which side of the car has got the bad wheel bearing and I've not been wrong yet! 2nd edit: Never mind, found a press here at work (new job) a couple of guys helped me out and i got the new bearing pressed in. Now tonight ill put everything back in and hopefully it will cure the problem, Ill update as soon as im done. Thanks
So back to the question, does the old bearing need to be pressed out and new one pressed in? thanks again for your help Edit: I know some of you said its a wheel bearing, Im not being hardheaded but i couldnt help but try this first because the bearing is only $35. If this dont cure it then I'll move on to the wheel bearing. This post has been edited by eggman40: Jun 6, 2007 - 2:36 PM |
