There was an article I was reading a while back and it listed a few interesting ways to save on your gas milage, I wish I could remember where it was so I could help you out. A couple of ways would be of course to accellerate slower. They were doing these test on a late model bmw and from simple accelerating at a reasonable pace instead of gunning it everytime, they received 2 mpg more over their baseline mpg over a course of average driving. It's also a good idea to shift so early that your engine drops to around 1000 rpms, someone might be able to help you more with the mechanical reasoning behind this, but your engine usually makes alot less power at lower rpms and less power means less consumption. Also, it's dangerous, but improving aerodynamics always helps in efficiency. (I don't recommend this) You could drive down the highway directly behind a semi-truck(drafting), the air will blow over the truck and you will receive less wind resistance. Like I said, I don' recommend this, but you might be able to avoid some wind resistance by staying a reasonable distance behind a truck. There's also the fact that the more weight you're carrying, the more effort your engine has to exert, try unloading your trunk. Taking excess weight out of your trunk or bed of your truck could help, think about all the guys that place 300 lbs of sand in the back of their truck to get traction in the snow and leave the sand after the snow is gone. If you're desparate, you could also drive with alot less gas in your tank if you're only doing city driving. The additional reduction in weight could help you out if you're accellerating with only a quarter of a tank of gas. You can also go on a diet, think about the fat people that are 200 lbs overweight that are driving around, their cars are suffering from carrying around that extra weight.

(don't quote me on that number) -------------------- |

I was reading about warm air intakes a week or two ago on a forum dedicated to hypermiling. By routing hot air to the filter, the ecu leans out the fuel flow and yields a minor increase in mileage.
Just search for warm air intake or hot air intake on google. |

if your warm, close your windows and use the A/C or vent rather than roll them down and let the wind come in cuz that slows you down and makes the engine work harder.

Create a weather controlling device so we can change the properties of the air and lower the drag on the cars.
or, make Continuouslly Variable Transmissions mandatory on all automatic transmission cars. -------------------- |

Hit the apex thro turns, if possible. If you can keep a straighter line even in daily driving, you wont bleed off speed thro the turn as much, and thus not need to get on the gas to bring the car back up to speed. Saves on tire wear too.

Gotta love finals. Thanks People with cruise control have remarked how having cruise control enabled significantly improves mpg compared with their best efforts manually. It turns out that computers can detect a speed change and compensate way before the combination of the human brain and speedo can. With that in mind, perhaps some clever people could create an ECU that sits between fly-by-wire brakes and throttle, and listens to speedo and rpm data; and smooths out small changes in speed without adversely affecting response when a driver needs to react quickly to a dangerous situation? It might additionally want to make use of gps and radar to detect relative speeds of cars in front. -------------------- Davey
