This is pissing me off to the point to where I almost want to just cut the cables and figure it out after i pull the engine/tranny out..the picture is below..the last time i took out a tranny there was a bracket that held the cables to the transmission that I just had to unbolt, the celica doesn't have that..it looks like there is a nut to spin, but it doesn't seem to do anything. (by the way) does anyone want some JDM tails for a celica hatchback? I have the convertible and they don't fit..i'll ship them to your door..$280 obo..

you are doing it wrong, it's easy.

there is a "C" clip holding it in. You can see the top of it from your pic. Just get a pair of vise grips or plyers and pull it strait up (you may want to wiggle it side to side a bit and spray some PB Blaster on it) and the clip will come out. Then the cable just comes right off the bracket.

the same clips hold the cables to the shifter arms of the tranny, so you have 4 in total I believe.

i've been pulling and pulling dude..the things aren't coming out..are you sure you are telling me the right way? When you really look at it there doesn't seem to be a way to pull it up..if I could move the square washer-type piece with the lip down toward the transmission then the cable should be able to shift and I'd be able to pull it up as you say..

they come strait out. They are difficult to get out sometimes, that's why PB Blaster is your friend.

here's a pic of them

IPB Image

get vise grips on the lip, then kinda rock them from side to side, they will come out.

yes guys I know its an old thread so be it.

I just got a shifter cable from a 95 camry dx. The camry obviously has a s54 transmission. So will it fit on our 94-99 Celica gt transmission?? Is it the same exact length? I"m using the main shifter cable that attaches to the base of the shift knob. the cable that does most of the work.

Not sure if you meant the Camry was S54 trans (M/T) or A104E trans (A/T), i mean it is possible to have a M/T Camry though. But heres what I got based on the M/T cable.

Im comparing the two, and the differences are.

1. Different part numbers
2. Exterior cover grommet is different and location
3. more c-clip retainers than the celica for holding it stable
4. camry ones look a bit longer
5. One camry cable is 1 part number and the other is a different part number, in the celica, there is only 1 part number for the shifter cable assembly.
6. Those part numbers don't even cross reference (or used in other cars), meaning the celica and the camry both use different shifter cables all together.

I'm not confident they would fit....or even if it would, looks like it would need the grommet modified, and where the c-clips go. Good Luck

the part number above, is that for both camry cables???

Yes trdproven, I pulled the cable from a 95 Toyota Camry DX witch has a 5sfe mated to a S54 transmission.

Would you like me to post pictures with the length and up close pics. perhaps someone else has one that way we can compare pics. I don't want to pull mine only to find out I've wasted time in pulling the cable and interior pieces.
