Ok, how can i tell when my clutch is starting to go? I recently got my second celica (this time manual), the car has 97k miles, and comparing it to my 99civic with 142k miles, the clutch seems not as grabby, and significantly easier to push down. Im not sure how well the owner before me drove it though, the clutch just seems quite different than my civics (i know they vary between cars) but...
what are the symptoms?, sorry if this has been coverd, i couldnt really find anything.

i cant remember if its 2nd or thrid gear, but you take off in 2nd or 3rd (instead of 1st gear) and if the car stalls the clutch is fine. but if the clutch is worn out it will slip therefore meaning the car wont stall.

its just like beno said but i heard to test to see if the clutch is good was to start off if 5th gear wink.gif and if the car doesnt stall your gonna need a new clutch soon. I personally was able to get the car rolling in 2nd but 3rd gear is a bit harder i stalled out. Don't do the test too many times you might cook the clutch.

the clutch is easy to push down cuz its a soft clutch. maybe the last owner of ur civic put in a stage 2 or stage 3 clutch which is harder?

also, if its going out rapidly, when you shift as soon as you come off the clutch hit the gas, not too hard put get down on it some and if your engine rpms shoot up without you accelerating to accompany that rpm boost, then your clutch is slipping.

my civic's clutch is actually a lot softer than my celi's. The clutch on the civic was replaced for the first time at 198k, the car has 220k on it. the clutch in the celi has never been replaced and the car is at 110k, and it takes noticeably more force to put it down.]

Every civic I've ever driven with a manual was a much lighter clutch than most of the other manuals I've driven.

Mine was completely stock. I really only buy cars from old people.

The clutch seemed really responsive, well, up until I tried to teach the mrs how to drive a stick and heard her repeatedly rip it's heart out and shake it up aka dropping it. I don't know how it is since then. One of my buddies is borrowing it. Smelled like sh*t though after that. frown.gif

Then she asked for me to teach her on the celi.

lol.

yeah i MUST have an aftermarket clutch in the civic, i bought it cause i needed a car, hondas are reliable, and it looked pretty cool, also to learn some bodywork and try to get it looking good, while i found a car with less miles. i got the civic for sale now so that i can put my celi on the road.

anyway, i checked it out and i was able to take off in 2nd and 3rd, but when i tried it in 5th it stalled out, so i guess its good right. smile.gif

no im thinking your clutch might be gone,
5th has to much force requires to get the car moving from stand still so im sure it will stall 90% of clutches. thats why i thought it was 2nd or 3rd gear

yeah, i can start in second with my ST, but 3rd she chokes out on me, and your clutch may be fine, sometimes mine acts up, but then sometimes its like brand new. i think the weather around here messes with mine, when its cold out it acts like it wants to slip, but when its warm its grabbing as soon as i touch the pedal

the clutch on my dad's civic is MUCH softer than my celica's. even when I had my old clutch which was completely toast. it's just how they are, I think they're two different kind of clutch systems or something like that.
