Well its insulation to keep the engine warm during the winter. Since some guys are rolling around without that insulator on their gt-four hoods including myself and I live in MN, you'll be okay without it.

they only come on GT's, the ST does not have it.

I don't really think its to keep the engine warm. some say it's to absorb the excess heat that the 5S gives off, another one is that it's like a fire protection thing and if there is a fire the plastic tabs melt and it smothers the fire. I don't think anyone really knows but everybody has their own theory.

Read somewhere that it also protected the paint on the hood. If you don't have it the paint turns to sh!t.

I have heard that cloth under the hood has heat absorbing purpose. Especially is used for GT-fours where is on top intercooler. Subarus may have the same style of hood air circulation and heat absorbing...

It's an emergency blanket for camping. Your engine warms it, so it's ready to be used on cold nights. Don't you ever read the owner's manual?

actually, its a parachute. When you´re driving on high hills and your car falls off from a cliff, hood pops up and the parachute opens.

Maskedman: thats what my owners manual says.

Pretty much the only reason it is there. To keep the car as quiet as possible, any other reason is purely coincidental. Bonnets do not need the heat protection...even GT4`s (remember the charge cooler is usually quite cool to touch compared to the rest of the engine bay). Engines dont need to be kept warm. etc etc I is purely to keep the noise down.

Late model GTs don't come with them stock. Evidently someone at Toyota decided they were not necessary at some point in the production.
x2 on that not being what is coming thru your vents. The stuff coming thru your vents is the little seal around the joints and shut offs in your vents. Been doing any in dash mods or repairs lately?

actually I know exactly what he's talking about and it does look like that under hood stuff. It's not tho - it's the seal around the vents and doors in the a/c ducting.
Do what batman said and clean the stuff out and you should be good.
