Damn man, that sucks really bad. Sorry to say, but you should pay...regardless of whatever the kid let you do, you were the one that made the mistake. It'd be the same way if you let someone drive your car and they wrecked it. Bad judgement is part of the blame, but its not the reason why the accident occurred. I would try to work something out with your parents in somehow paying it off, or perhaps you could meet an agreement with the other kid and you could split the cost somehow. Good luck either way.

I agree, you should pay. But ask to see the quote from the bodyshop or ask to get your own. Just to double check.

I'd just payt for it man. You have to. Unless you can hire Johnny Cochran and he'll find a loophole to make it be the store's fault that had the sidewalk there. lol.

Bad luck bonzai, but may I ask how old you are? I don't mean this in any condescending way or anything.

"you break it, you buy it". I've driven parents friends cars, and my friends have driven some of my parents cars (including the beemer), and we all knew that if one of us crashed, we'd be paying for it. I don't want to be hard on ya, but you have to pay your way through life mate smile.gif There are always diff circumstances tho - maybe their family is much better off than yours or something. But If you want to know - she could quite easily take you to court and win.

PS. I think it kind of sucks that your friend isn't in trouble though. I reckon he should pay $500 of the $2000!

their insurance probably covers it but they may not want to use it because their rates would go up.

they shouldn't have to have their rates go up or pay for something that was your fault.

Oh yeah. My insurance requires me to add the names of any other drivers before I have any chance of getting money. I have a full comprehensive insurance too. Could be different in the states though.

I agree, you should pay. I don't ride or go driving in another kid's or kid's parent's car without mine and his parent's permission. I know it seems dumb, but it saves your ass in the end. Anyhow, sorry about the incident, I wish it hadn't of happened. Anyhow, good luck on getting the money to pay for it.

Not to be rude, but to state the obvious it was your fault and his fault.

(a) He shouldn't have let you drive (being it's not his car)

(b) You shouldn't have driven because, well you know...

Speaking from experience, when I was about your age me and a friend went racing after highschool (ironically it was after a safe driving presentation) .. so we both had slow cars.. him a 1991 Pontiac Sunbird and me a 1991 Corolla Sedan. Anyhow. Evenly matched we were neck and neck so I tried to pass he tried to block, and bam!!!

My fender went right into his back quarter panel! We were freaking! And didn;t wanna go thru insurance. We ended up coming to a deal that we'd fix our own cars.. and take the heat. It was at this point I realized I'm an adult.

Sorry to break it to you but you gotta take control. We all do, at some point. You and your friend gotta come up with a plan of attack and follow it through.

So what I'd suggest, and a few of the other members here have :

- price out the cost of the wheels
- price out the tires
- price out the cost of mechanical repairs to suspension (etc etc) and alignment and so on
- price out the cost of body work

THEN.. find alternatives! hunt and hunt. You'll find it. I'm sure you can lower that $2000 figure down by at least a few hundred dollars.

Then if you two go splits on it, you're set. Work extra hours, or something.

I don't know what else to you'd be able to do. But it's a good life lesson, and be thankful that both of you are ok and that NO other cars/people were involved.

Best of luck,

Shaun

Her insurance would only cover it if he was over 21, I believe is the policy of most. Something similar just happened to my girlfriend. She was out in Cali with me, her dad used her car in Maine, and completely totalled it.

It went on my girlfriend's insurance...they covered it, her dad paid the deductible, and her insurance will not increase because he was not a regular driver on the policy. His insurance will increase however, because now he has an at-fault accident on his record.

Normally you'd be all set, but I think the under-21 thing is what is the issue.

I doubt there's $2k worth of damage. They probably brought it to Toyota and that's what they quoted her for a new set of rims and tires. Was there any visible body damage? Tell the lady you want to bring it to your guy to get a quote on it, and that you want to help as much as possible. If you haven't talked to her IN PERSON yet and apologized profusely, do it. It sucks but you gotta step up and correct this any way you can. More than likely she's either going to scream at you (if she does take it all and let her get it out of her system), or feel bad for you and offer to help come up with a solution, or both.

Don't worry about it man.. this is just one of those life lessons... something we all have to go through. Two very important lessons I've learned: Don't trust other people with your cars, and Don't let friends (or your girl's best friend) borrow money from you.

Keep us updated and if there's any way we can help let us know.
