What kind of gas mileage do you get? Options

I'd like to have an idea of what kind of gas mileage you guys get. I'll start:

Year/Model: 1995 GT
Transmission: 5 speed manual
Mods: Stock
Recent tune-ups/maintenance: New spark plugs, Gumout fuel treatment, filter and oil change, Seafoam treatment
Mileage: I just averaged 26 overall on my first tank of gas, this was with aggressive driving, and before the tune-up stuff mentioned above.

Wow, so you get about the same MPG with your 130BHP 2.2L engine as i get with my 175BHP 2L engine? How did they manage to make the 5sfe so crappy?

You could have a truck like me and get 16mpg.. Spot moaing! lol My celica had 30mpg it was an ST tho.

I get over 30 mpg on highway only...in city..its pretty bad (very close to the EPA MPG chart)

milage i average 25-35mpg depending on my driving, put on a new head on a friends car, his now kicks the **** outta mine and her gets like 30-40mpg too

What would be the best way to improve gas mileage? And maybe and wrong about this, correct me if I am, but I thought Toyota 4-cylinders were VERY capable of getting 30+ MPG, maybe the 5S-FE is an exception?

I have the ST (7a-fe?), and get 30 MPG wtih lots of city driving. I get 35 MPG on road trips where 90% of the driving is on the freeway (and keeping at 70 MPH or less - speeding kills my mileage). I average 32 MPG.

I also have some pretty tall / wide tires (more rotational weight), and 242,000 miles on my motor, so I'm sure that hurts.

Using 2 oz of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant per fill-up boosts me about 2 MPG (added to numbers above). Lucas is one of the only (if not THE only) cleaner / lubriator that's a patrolium product instead of a solvent - so it's safe for continued use. It gets great reviews from the chemist nerds @ bobistheoilguy.com

when you guys are on the highway though what speed do you travel at??....if your going a long distance...see i travel back and forth on the turnpike at like 80 so i use about a 1/4 tank if not more for about 90-100 miles not to mention im at like 4K....it drives me nuts...need a 6th gear!!

70-75MPH at the most here, and I agree, this drives me nuts.

With gas prices at $3.50 a gal, and cops swarming our area I don't dare go over 70 MPH very often. Look into the lucas stuff. If you're paying more than $2 / GAL at the pump you'll be saving $$$, and you'll notice the engine runs smoother.

about 30 mpg of somewhat "spirited" city driving. i usually shift at around 4000 rpm until i hit about 5 over the speed limit. and then keep it constant around 2500 rpm. don't drive highway too much. but when i do its usually around 70, no higher than 75 mph.

X3. I don't know how you other GT guys are getting such great gas mileage. I routinely get 22-23 regardless of how I drive.

How come you GT guys are doing so poorly? You only have .4 more L than our ST's. Doesn't seem like that should drop you 5-10 MPG. I know in Suzuki's, if things go wrong (like o2 censor goes out), they'll go into "limp home" mode which runs much richer than normal... which makes them eat through gas quicker... I wonder if Celicas do the same thing, or if the 2.2L is just really sucky for gas? I mean... really... that's turbo charged / V6 kind of gas mileage.

What would be the best way to improve gas mileage?

Slow down. The harder the accelleration, the more fuel needed in the Air / Gas ratio to accelerate. Speeds above 55 / 60 MPH start to generate exponentially more wind drag - I think our celi's can get to about 65 / 70 without too much drag.

Reduce weight - ESPECIALLY rotational weight. Tires like mine (tall and wide) require a lot more energy (more gas) to get moving. Dead weight & rotational weight really kill your in-town gas mileage. If I went back to stock wheels, I'd probably see 2 MPG's better on freeway, and 3-4 MPG in town.

Tuneup - Make sure your fluids / plugs / wires / air cleaner etc are all fresh and changed at regular intervals. Make sure your valves are adujusted etc.... maintanence is important.

the 5sfe does run pretty rich at WOT. part throttle cruising should be at or close to 14.7 though.

when I try to be conservative, according to my AFC NEO the peak percentage that I put the gas down is like 35% thorttle and mostly just cruising at like 5-6% throttle. and peak RPM will be like 3770 but I try to cruise between 2000-2500 and I shift at like 2700.

with the A245E gearing im turning about 3500rpm at 70-80mph and i get 35mpg at 70-75mph. around town the best ive ever gotten was 26mpg, but i'm a bit of a lead foot and usually bring 1st to about 3000rpm when leaving a light, 2nd to about 2500, then settle into 3rd/4th.

I just checked mine for you guys and I got 25MPG - all city. Mine's manual and I'm at 4K RPM @ 80MPH which I regularly hit on the freeway. That's pretty decent gas mileage unless you are trying to compare to the newer cars and hybrids and stuff. What exactly were you expecting?
Ya'lls gas is high tho. I pay around $2.95 for Chevron/Exxon 93 octane.

I dissagree - 25 MPG for a mid 90's Japanese 4 banger 2 door coup is really really lame. My best friend's mid-90's Nissan 4 Door Nissan Maxima auto gets 26 MPG, my 97 Tracker 4 door SUV gets 25+ MPG, my '94 Subaru easily got 30 MPG with hard driving, my girlfriends 97 V6 4 door automatic Jetta gets 28 MPG, my roomie's mid-90's (I think 96?) 2.2L Accord 4 door auto is getting 28 MPG.

All of the above are mid-90's imports, most of which are 4 doors and / or V6 powered, and none are hybrids. A I-4 2 door coup should be comfortably in the high 20's with agressive city driving, to mid 30's on the highway. My 242,000 mile engine MUST me tired by now, it's only .4 L smaller, and I'm getting 10 MPG better than the 2.2L? Unless they're around 200 HP (which the yota 2.2 isn't even close to), 25 MPG is pretty pathetic.

Ya'lls gas is high tho. I pay around $2.95 for Chevron/Exxon 93 octane.

It's $3.50 here for the cheap gas, and $4 a gal for Chevron 93! The joys of living in California
