i was reading in a recent issue of Modified Mag and they did a performance test w/ an evo, on test they did stock, and another without the intake filter, and it had gained 5hp or so. i understand that without out a filter there is better air flow but a greater risk of getting something caught in the engine. i have a drag race and was wondering if it was worth it to take out the filter for just the quarter mile, and put it in every time after i take the run, and then take it out before the run again. actually that wasnt a quick question but w/e thanks

most hard core drag race cars dont even use air filters.
they just run an open pipe. There is no safe answer to your question. If your engine back is super clean and your lucky, it should be fine to run without and air filter. But if your engine bay is dirty/dusty as if you just got done driving off road. I would not recomend it at all. And if during your drag race the wind picks up a cloud of dust/sand and your drive through it. Who's to blame. |

now that i think about it, doing this with a 3day old engine is a bad idea, thanks much for the input

I wouldn't risk it for a few runs. Air filters were made for a reason, and for drag cars as your were saying, are not regular cars, they are made only for what it was built for.

Use a panty-hose. That's what I do. It opens it up and keeps the chunks out.

Thought you might find in useful in making a decision. "I ran my CRX for a little while with absolutely no air filter. I don't recommend it to at all, cause who knows what crap you'll suck in...maybe a bolt or something, lol. ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by tin_foil: Apr 24, 2007 - 11:09 PM -------------------- ![]() |

I've heard of people running with some nylon panty hose stretched over the throttle body. I guess it's better than no filtration at all.
