I have heard people mention it but haven't seen one.
I haven't swapped so the opening is directly over my distributor on my 7A. I could probably make one easy enough if I knew what it looked like. I thought about using some 1/16" thick abs and cutting the shape on a cnc and mounting it under the grate if anyone else needs or wants one I should be making mine sometime in the next few weeks. If anyone has a pic of a real one It would be greatly appriciated. -------------------- JDM guy made me do it.

Cool thanks. I think I had better stick with aluminum anodized black
because of the heat, I will probably need to do a different vent setup also. -------------------- JDM guy made me do it.

Will do, I am trying to figure out a few things, If I look into it I could probably get a louvered plate and cut the shape very similar to the pic above, I thought about blocking it completely and making a couple drain holes in the corners but I'm not sure how the paint on the alluminum hood would react to the extra heat by the vent being blocked, maybe it wouldn't. I'll try to draw some stuff up in the next few days for imput. -------------------- JDM guy made me do it.

I drew the shape and hole pattern, this is what it could look like
with no vents at all. I could put this or a trd logo or a regular toyota emblem or some custom work with the right kind of file. I will look into some louvered plate like the pic above and would still have room for a small logo in the middle. I am still tinkering I will post more when I get a chance. I thought about making something flat like below with big slots and a seperate plate below that could be removed or opened and shut. throw me some ideas. -------------------- JDM guy made me do it.

The same thing I just added some slots.
I didn't have much time to work on it today. My boss was out of town today also so I couldn't ask him about the louvered material. I looked a little closer at my bay with the grate off and everything is tucked up behind so I just need something to slow down rain drops while moving not block them completely. I almost think if I made a shield toward the back of the hole, facing down toward the engine it would stop water from hitting the valve cover and distributor. On my car it would deflect onto the exhaust manifold. I'll try to draw something on that in the next few days -------------------- JDM guy made me do it.

Damn - that's almost exactly what I was planning to do as I was trying to say in the other thread. I'm gonna see if I can find any lovered material around my shop. I did find some rather nice brushed aluminum and i was trying to figure out how I would do the Toyota Devil Horns pic on it. I want my plate to be black and the symbol to be red. I wonder how much this will cut down on the venting tho. Would be nice to have something that was easily removable but would stay in place when needed even when driving at high speeds. Pretty much why all I've done is cut the material.
97lestyousay - If you need material let me know. this stuff is nice and brushed aluminum would look good unpainted. I don't want to bug my CNC guys to cut slots tho. Think you could setup a program? Maybe we could work together on this if you wanted help. -------------------- |

Here is the material I selected. This side is scratched up because it has no protection and it's stocked in large sheets that rub together when moved:
This side tho has a white sticker that doesn't leave any stickyness on it and protects the look of the brushed aluminum. it will look very good after the sticker is removed. This makes it easier to machine the stuff and have it still look good afterwards. This would probably be the side we painted. I think regular high temp engine paint would work out well: I only have about 6' of this stuff so I can't supply material for everyone but I would be willing to cut enough for 3-4 peices. I'd donate one for 97lestyousay and one for Pressure2 [for all the help you've given me with the 5S-FTE project]. I'm sure I could order more but we would have to pay for it. Also I work in CAD so if you need any help with a detail drawing let me know. BTW - the stuff is .065 thick so a little over 1/16". Probably 1/16" with the sticker removed [it's pretty thick]. Weird that we were both going for the devil horns look. Hope this helps. This post has been edited by Negative: May 1, 2007 - 8:52 AM -------------------- |

I haven't really decided what to do on mine yet I just had
hellica emblem file at home I need to bring a dxf file of the trd logo from the shop, I'm just kind of playing with some Ideas right now. As far as material we have a bunch of stuff laying around. We build scanners for aircraft inspection so all our finishes have to be crazy good. As far as black with red it could be anodized black then paint the logo red with high heat paint then wiped clean with acetone, the emblem would be a recessed pocket so the paint would stay in. I would like to find something like the louvered stuff they use for the real ones, it would be way easier and faster than slotting a bunch of stuff and it would keep with the OEM look. Whatever it is I am going to have to be able to do as many as I can in one day because that is all the machine time I will have. I am also doing some angel eyes for my high beams the same day out of flouresent acrylic, so that limits the time on these even more. I'll check on the material today. Here is one I tried it isn't going to block as much rain as the factory one.
I can't find the louvered material anywhere and a local shop wanted 70.00 each just to put them in not including me cutting out the shape and holes. Its more of a rain slower than a cover but at least it won't be blasting directly on my wires. It also hides my puny 7A. -------------------- JDM guy made me do it.

that looks awesome randy, nice job.
Id like to see what just an etched toyota symbol in there would look like. Do you plan on painting it (the cover and/or the TRD) ? -------------------- |

I tested one with a blackmarker in the TRD and I liked the
contrasting black grate silver plate with black TRD. The plan was to anodize but the material had so many flaws it would show thru the anodizing, so I guess I will use some high heat paint. I thought about a powder coat as well but not sure what color. Black with a silver TRD would look good I think but I'm not sure. Edit: I like this, I think the car color in the letters in my case green would look good. This should look similar to installed with the dark engine bay under it.
