so i had a head gasket replaced and now i have no compression in the #4 cyl. i took it to another shop and they said it might be a bent valve, then they asked me if some1 tried 2 start it with the cams in wrong. and thats exactly what the guys that tried 2 fix it were doing when i was at there shop. so i told the guys who did the work and they said it could not b there fualt bcuz its a "zero interference head" and that the cams dont come down enough to bend the valves. BS or NOT?

As far as I'm aware, the 3SGE (Not BEAMS) has e "Zero Inerference" configuration. The valves don't extend far enough down into the combustion chamber to physically touch the cylinders. The cylinders also have a recessed feature in the top to avoid and interference condition, should the timing belt snap for example.

I've always been led to believe that low compression on an engine can be caused by shot piston rings? Maybe you should get those looked at?

yes, the 5s/3s engines are non-interference, unless you modify the cylinder head, or pistons.....btw, why did you replace the head gastket?

it over heated and blew, the Rad was leaking.

Did you get the head resurfaced? They can warp when overheated; could cause a compression loss if its not perfectly flat.

Yeah, it's true. If it was BS I wouldn't have an engine right now cause the previous owner hadn't replaced the timing belt in over 100K and when I replaced it the belt had slipped nearly a third of the way around from TDC. It makes for a little lower compression ratio on our cars than some, but it's nice when the belt goes. wink.gif

Yeah, it's either your piston rings (but you'd get blue smoke if it was), failing that, your cylinder head could be warped, cracked, or the gasket might not be creating a good enough seal around the effected cyclinder.

Is your car using a lot of oil?

yeah its using mnore oil than it should be, but its weird no check engine light came on (well it did today for like 45 min then went back off), but i DID get the head resurfaced. and b4 the head blew it was sputtering the same way it does now, could it have been more than just the head gasket? oh and i feel some liquid coming out of the tail pipe, and its not gas but it comes out cold. maybe just not a good seal with the head gasket huh? would just a bad seal cause all this?

Maybe there's not enough of a good seal with the new gasket. What torque did you tighten the bolts down to? The head could be cracked? Exhaust gasses could be leaking into the oil/water channels, this might cause the "sputtering" you describe in your post? Have you checked the underside of the oil filler cap? If you've got a dodgy head gasket or cracked head you'll get a creamy (looks like chicken soup) slime on the underside of the cap. Failing that, take the rocker cover off and have a look inside (you'll have to get another gasket for that if you disturb it). Also, look for oil/black sludge in the expansion bottle (engine coolant bottle). If your piston rings are shot, you'll be getting blue smoke out of the tail pipe, especially under hard acceleration. Get somebody to follow you and tell you what's coming out of the tailpipe. As for the liquid coming out of the tailpipe, that is probably just condensation, that usually stops when the engine/exhaust gets hot.

it does help a lot thanks. i think i am gonna check all the things u said then just tear it down again and have 2 get a new head gasket. and i know i torqued the head bolts to spec. At this point i really dont know what else to do but check the things u siad then tear it down again, but thanks again.
