Guys,
Did some research, and apparently the transmission that comes with the 94+ SS2 Celica (the one with the super-strut) is not a S54, but an E56 transmission. I've known about this trans for a couple of years now, but I never really thought anything of it til now - this is an E series trans mated to a 3S in a 6G gen FWD Celica!!! What's the possibility that the stock axles for this car would fit the MR2's E153 trans - giving us the perfect length axle?

I've swapped between the super-strut and standard suspension on my car, and I can say that the hub placement is the same - so that wont be an issue.

Now the part that worries me - this trans is also offered in other (non performance) cars ,though with different gearing and such. A few of these cars are available stateside:

88-90 AE95 Corolla
90-93 AE95 Corolla wagon.
95+ AE103 Corolla
94+ SXA Rav 4

If I get some time, I may go out and pick up an axle from one of these cars and see if it will fit the MR2's splines. If it works, I'll see what pricing Jeff @ Champion Toyota can get. Here are the part numbers if anyone is interested:

drive shaft, RH : 43410-20690 SS2 Celica w/SSS
drive shaft, RH: 43410-20700 SS2 Celica w/SSS w/ABS

what engine is this mated with and where is the car originated from? 94+ SS2 Celica (the one with the super-strut)

'88-'91 V6 5-speed Camry axles fit perfectly for my 3s-gte/E153 swap in My Camry. That car uses an E52 transmission (the V6 auto axles also work, but that's beside the point). I can almost guarantee those axles will work perfectly for you guys. As long as you get the correct stock LSD vs. non-LSD axles, any E-series 2WD transmission axles are compatible at the transmission side.

The next worry would be the price! laugh.gif

all you have to do is change the outer c.v. joints and they should work.

I wasn't saying that - though it is probably good to make it obvious. My point is that any 2wd E-series axles will be compatible with the transmission side (not counting non-LSD vs. LSD). If you find any e-series axles that were in the ST20x chassis, then they will work.

PS. Are you sure about the hubs? My Camry axles pop into the ST205 front hubs I have laying around (at least, I think they do?). Either way, they are probably the wrong length as the ST20x is wider than my car.

I picked up the camry outer axles before any they were too long and the splines didn't fit the 205 hubs. The inner axles must be shorter on the Camry then.

LSD may be an issue, though I think it only effects the LH side axle.

Not the Camry axle debate again... The older, 1990 or so, Camry outers will fit the ST204. The newer 1994+ Camry outers will not because they are too big.

Not true, It may be 93 or newer, the year I tried were either a 91 or 93. The splines were to big to fit in the hub.

Not true, It may be 93 or newer, the year I tried were either a 91 or 93. The splines were to big to fit in the hub.


I don't know the exact years. I know I've read of at least 3 people that have used the older 1990 or later camry axels.

Not true, i change my axel two days ago, and i got a 91 v6 camry axel. It worked perfectly. The 92+ years are A) too long B) and have Fatter Splines that will not fit into the 6gc hub. I am 100% this is accurate.



My set up:



92 mr2 non lsd tranny - E-153



92 mr2 Inner axles or half shafts



91 V6 Carmry outter axles





set up works perfectly.







Also just so you know 90 and 91 v6 camry axle is the same thing smile.gif

Too much work, go with my set up its way easier and effective.

I WANNA DO THE E153 SWAP BUT I HAVENT READ ONE THRED THAT SAYS THE COMPLETE SWAP WITH A 3sgte FWD CONVERSION TO THE E153, DIDNT ANYONE DO A PROPER SWAP SO FAR?

THE BEST I SAW IS THIS

92MR2 TRANNY WITH INNER HALF SHAFTS
91 V6 CAMRY AXLES (OUTER HALFSHAFTS AND AXLE)

WHAT OTHER CONVERSION IS NEEDED?

if you are reffering to me than no, you do not need a spacer of anykind. Just the combo posted above
