I've heard that upgrading the camshaft of the 5sfe is a tradeoff in less low end torque and idling problems. Has anyone upgraded their camshafts in their 5sfe? If so, .. details?fact?faults? thanks in advance..

most guys here stay away from cams #1, cause there expensive, around 600$ for the set.
#2, its a bit of work to get them in.
#3 there are only a couple places that actually make them for the 5s.
that said,
there is a 20-30whp gain to be had on the 5s with cams alone.
it was one of the mr2oc guys that got like a 30whp gain with a set cams, on the older gen motor.
i would tend to think there would be a little less of a gain on our motors, but still a big gain compared to most other mods that are easily available to us, other than turboing or nitrous.
im hoping to get a set at some point before the end of the year.

is it possible to modify your head to fit the 3sgte cams? ... because i know the bore is smaller in the 3sgte since it's a 2.0... if that can't work.. what about swapping the 5sfe head for the 3sgte one?

there have been cases of swapping the heads of the 3sgte, but with the cams, i have personally never heard of it done.....i think though, that there are a couple of ppl on these forums with 3sgte heads, and a 5sfe block...

does the 3sgte head make much of a difference performance wise? .. because you obviously can't leave the 5sfe cams in the 3sgte head.

no you cant interchange cams between heads.
the 5sgte is not as easy as just slapping the head on and calling it a day, its basicly a 3sgte swap, + a bunch of work.

I think the MAIN problem with cams for the 5SFE is not that they cannot make power... of course they can... but you'll be handicapped by the lack of adjustable cam timing. That's not even mentioning the *NEED* to build the bottom end to rev a bit (bigger cams = more revs needed for power) nor the lack of tuneability on the stock ECU (no... a piggyback isn't quite enough in most cases)...

thought it would be a good idea to revive this thread considering another that i found on mr2oc.com I guess that on there, a guy is actually working on fitting 3s/ cams on his 5s by machining his head...its a work in progress but something to keep an eye on....

yeah i know.....a 5sfe with 3sg/ te cams......it is def a difference from the head swaps...
