So I was driving to the gym this afternoon when something strange happened. The check engine light flickered on a couple times and the engine cut off. I had my foot on the clutch at the time, so I just released the clutch and it started back up again. After the gym it started and drove fine. Now, on my way home tonight it did it again. It cut again, and I pulled over and tried to start it.... nothing. It cranks over, but wouldn't start. After a couple tries it finally started up and I got about a block down when it did it again. This time it was still running, but when I would give it some gas it felt as though I was doing 25MPH in 5th gear.

Then it shut off. For good.

My first thought was the fuel pump, but when had a friend crank it over I could smell the gas. So I move onto spark. I pulled a plug wire and had my friend crank it again.... no spark. I checked my plug connections and everything was on correct. I didn't have the right tools to check the distributor, and it was pouring rain (Why do you always break down when its pitch black, cold, on a back road, and pouring rain?)

So she was towed to my mechanic and he'll have a look-see tomorrow, but I would like to hear the thoughts of those who may have ideas as to what is causing this.

Ugh... I'm going to bed.

i would vote on since its rain, and the possible vulnerable areas of wiring due to the engine bay tuck, its going to be distributor/electrical related.

check your fuse box check for giggles. distributor is another good idea.

The shop is going to check the distributor whilst I am at work today. If thats fine I'll probably roll over there after work and poke around in the wheel well to check fuses. I would have yesterday, but again with the darkness and the rain....

All of the underbody plastics are still there, and the fusebox tucked back and away and is accessible from the driver's wheel well (after pulling back some plastic)

As far as wires and such go, They are all wrapped up and nothing (to my knowledge) is exposed.

I don't think I have the diagnostic outlet anymore.

Oh no frown.gif I guess the only thing you can do now is to probably find the ecu pinouts for the blacktop ecu and find out where the E1 and TE1 wires are. So this will involve retracing the wiring through the loom (hopefully that isn't the case). Try contacting Coomer and ask him if he somehow made a part within the wiring that could allow you to do the diagnostic first though.

Well what he did was run two wires off on their own that when you connect them together it puts the car in safe mode and I can check codes at that point by how the lights react (from what I gather)

He did? Good, just as long as it's for the diagnostics of the car. Okay, try checking for the CEL and write down what codes you are getting. Post them on here and i'll try to see what I can help you out with from there.

Update: kinda...

I went to the shop today and they had ruled out the distributor. They are getting a pulse from it at the correct wavelength so that rules that out. Next is the Coil and Ignitor.

I ran to the local toyota junkyard and picked up a coil and ignitor and ran it back to the shop. I plugged the ignitor in and had them crank it... still no spark.

BUT!

I called Coomer and left him a message and he called me back. We chatted about the symptoms and he also thinks the ignitor might be the culprit. Because of the way its mounted on top of the coil it might have had too much road vibration and something might have broken off - so I am printing off Coomer's wiring diagrams and I'm going to drop those off at the shop tonight and fingers crossed that it works.

I had this same issue a little while back, make sure you have a solid connection into the ignitor coil. The pins in mine werent connecting well and caused it to conk out.

This happened before with my old engine too so im assuming is a known issue. Try wiggling the plug while you crank it... worked for me wink.gif

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far as is needed?

I found the part number to the proper ignitor and plugged it into ToyotaWorld's site and it came up with a list of all the other cars it came off of.... the tercel was not on the list - which is the one they gave me yesterday. So I called to the yard and told them to pull a 92-94 4runner V6 ignitor and have it ready for me when I get there this afternoon, so maybe I'll get the Yelli Celi back on the road tonight!

WELL I'm heading down to pick it up now. It turned out to that a good handfull of relays were rusted over (from the water) and needed to be replaced.

So I'm going to go get it and then hug it! I have missed driving a manual! (I've been driving my mom's Subaru Legacy 2.5GT)
