Since sarah now has her coupe, its in good working order, but its sooo gutless. Theres barely any torque and it just feels like it doesnt wanna go fast. So sarah has been asking me about different engine swaps we could do for a reasonable price that would give her car some more balls. So of course i listed the usual suspects, 4AGZE, 20V 4AGE, turboing her car....but then i got to thinkin...what about a 4E-FTE?? One of my friends i used to work with at a canadian tire did a 4E-FTE swap into a 4door trecel and that thing flew, and a buddy of mine used one of the CT9 turbos on his geo and has tons of parts for the turbos laying around. Has any one tried this swap?/do you think it would have enough power to actually feel it in our cars? I mean, its a 1.3L inline 4 with a small turbo, but do you think it would give the car a bit more of a kick??

a stock 4EFTE engine has just ~ 135 hp, what makes a tercel's fast is their weight and no the power of the engine.

i prefer the 4aGe 20v i saw the supercharged one, but it didn't seem like much of a difference between it and the silvertop, so im just gonna buy silvertop....

The money would definately be better spent on a more potent engine (3SGTE, 3SGE, 4AGE, 1MZFE) and even in stock form those swaps will be alot quicker and more satisfying than a modified 4EFTE.

Does Sarah have a 5spd or a Auto in her coupe? If she had a low mileage engine with 5spd, turbo may not be a bad idea either.

what i like about the 4age is that it has the same mounts and everything else....lot less work and costs less

4EFTE + CT12 @ 12PSI = roughly 160hp

A combination would be sweet for the Tercel and Paseo group but our Celicas weigh about 500 more lbs [Baseline Paseos with some weight reduction can get under 2000lbs]

You could venture into the 4AGZE, but no one really dares to go there. Local MR2 S/C owner with an unopened engine achieved 143whp. With a bigger pulley and other accesories. Now he is doing some porting with the intake and exhaust manifold, and yet a bigger pulley. Gains hoping for is around 200whp with Emanage

Your best bet for a little more umph would be the 4AGE 20Valve, easiest swap. Many have turbo'd these engines to 6-8psi without any problems. Thought it was matched with proper tuning.

IMO go 1MZFE

I'd go 4age, save some money (and trouble) over the 1mz swap, and put what you saved into paint. From all the complaining I heard saturday, I think she's enjoy a nice paintjob over 40 extra hp, lol.

5spd of course...but its not low milage..the engine has 175K miles on it right now and the tranny was replaced a year ago cuz the second gear sincro went on it. So the tranny is pretty fresh, but the motor isnt.

Ive been thinkin more along the 20V idea all along, but then i started thinkin it would be cool to have the 4E-FTE in it. Yea its not the best hp rating in the world, but thouse little CT9's spool up sooooo quick. Even when my buddy has his 1.0L turbo geo and had a CT9 on it, he was spooling at 2000rpm and hittin 10PSI at 2500..lol

But yea, i think we r gonna most likely end up with a 20V or a 4AGZE. I have pretty good acess to both of them and since alot of my friends in toronto are drifters, i have at least 2 guys who know 20Vs like the back of their hands, and i have another 3 guys who know 4AGZEs like its nothing.

and yea, paint and body works coming b4 engine swap is.

Thats good that it has a newer transmission. If you get a 4AGE or 4AGZE you can bolt the transmission right up to it, if for some reason it didn't come with a good lower mileage trans already bolted up to it.

If she wants a more ballsy/torquey motor, I would go with a 4AGZE from overseas. The 20v silvertop and blacktop 4AGE variants will require that she rev's much higher to get the same sort of punch that can be instantly felt in a 4AGZE....so it comes down to powerband really, plus both with be pretty good on fuel and agree with the ST layout.

Good luck with the new car Sarah, I'm sure you'll love it.

power band isnt a big deal for me either...she likes to shift at 3500rpm....but im trying to get her to relize its fine to shift up at higher rpms too. Only thing is with the GZE is that its gonna cost me less for the engine, but more for all the other crap to go along with it..aka piping for the chargecooler/intercooler. Im still thinkin i might lean more towards the coomer way and go with a tuck and ITBS.

If she shifts at lower RPMS and doesnt want to Rev the engine to redline.. the GZE v 20V is the best comparison..

Top end power? or Bottom end Grunt?

Silvertop is the cheap 20V route and the Blacktop is the nicer one. I believe they rate it at 165hp. The USDM 4AGZE from the MR2 can net a pretty good ammount of power. Especially a refreshed one. In [ ae92gts.com ] they group of guys rebuilt then GZE and netted 170whp. Impressive especially from the USDM GZE. For straight power with out rebuilt. Go with the AE111 GZE Its from the Levin GTZ. Rated at 165 as well. Its potent and I believe it will net more than.. 110whp like the ST.

Ive talked to one of the people that tried the GZE swap [Myneyzes] how ever you spell his name... he should be able to give you some info about it.

I've done a few 4EFTE swaps and they are pretty cool little engines. Also, one little tid-bit that you guys may not know: the 4EFTE will bolt right into an ST Celica with no mounting modifications, just use the Celica mounts and axles. smile.gif

That said, it would be the cheapest way to get a turbo engine into an ST Celica, which of course leaves plenty of upgrade potential. Personally I think it would be a pretty cool little swap... I've seen complete 4EFTE engine sets go for like $800 on ebay before. Good on gas, too.

That said, if you really like torque and fast throttle response, one can hardly beat the 4AGZE. It will simply light the tires up in first and second laying down all of its torque as soon as you step on the pedal. Upgrading the 4AGZE however.... gets a little more difficult.

And the 3SGTE, well, the 3SGTE is a 3SGTE, what more needs to be said biggrin.gif
