my car is a USDM from the BOSTON area. i bought it a few years ago from a reputable used car dealer here in Nova Scotia. i am having trouble determining if my car is CALI spec or just pain ol' USDM. i need to replace the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve since i am having startup and idling issues. i called the local TOYOTA parts counter and after spending 20 minutes on the phone and giving him my full VIN, the "specialist" could not commit to placing the order since he wasn't sure the car is CALI or USDM. i found the TOYOTA part number on the IAC and he told me it didn't make sense since that was a CALI SPEC part number on a non-CALI car. he also suggested that it was replaced with the wrong part-- but there is a yellow lacquer mark across the top of one of the mounting screws (looks like a manufacturer's tamper seal). this leads me to believe that it is the original. if anyone can tell me how to confirm my engine is CALI SPEC i would appreciate it greatly. i can then get on with the diagnostics and repairs. if this helps, here are a few TOYOTA part numbers from the EGR/VAC "plumbing":
1999 2.2l 5sfe automatic IAC 2270-74291 EGR 25620-74310 EVM (modulator) 25870-74090 MAP sensor 89420-20300 thanks r. -------------------- |

i originally thought i was gonna have to replace mine as well, but i was wrong. i just took off the 2 screws and the iac block. then i wiggled the valve a lil till it was free, then sprayed it with brake part cleaner. i kept wiggling it while i was doin this as well for about 1-2 mins. just to make shure. then i let it dry, and i put everything back together.

yeah. it does not need to be replaced but just cleaned out more than likely. mine needed cleaned too.
anyway, to tell if your car is CALI-spec or not. look on the the underhood emissions label. it'll either say something like "california emissions" or "federal emissions" or something along those lines. -------------------- 94 GT - Sold -------- 69 Pontiac Lemans - Sold 88 Alltrac - Sold ---- 04 WRX - Sold 00 GT-S - Sold ------ 91 Miata - project/drift car 95 GT - Sold -------- 96 GT - New Daily Drive |

well, you should be able to call a dealer, tell them your VIN number, and they could tell you which it is.

That's normal.
The VIN brings up alot, but there are still things it won't bring up. We always have to check when we get parts. Just like someone already said, check the emissions sticker under the hood. It will either say Meets Requirements of California Emissions or M R o Federal Emissions. This post has been edited by alltracman78: Jul 24, 2007 - 8:00 PM -------------------- |
