Prise off the three springs, Dremel with various rust removal brushes and stones, then hand sanded with 400 grit. Washed in sugar soap, rinse thoroughly and dry with an air gun taking care not to heat the plastic washers.

Two coats of Halfords (a high street automotive products retailer in the UK) mid grey metal primer (spray can), quick rub down with 1500 grit, wipe over with tack cloth to remove dust, then two coats of Humbrol Matt Black (also spray can). Finally, reattach springs.

Pendant points for anyone who can complete the quote I used as the thread subject. And no Googling for the answer.

It didn't actually take that long - perhaps two hours in total. I already had the front bumper off for some other work and one can probably remove and replace the catch without removing the bumper. The key is to have something else to do while it is soaking or while you are waiting for a coat to dry.
