engin light comes on Options

my engin light comes on sometimes then other times its off i took it to auto zone the say car is to old to connect comp. to they say i need to spen bout 75 for a diag. im not going to spend that much just to find it was an oxegen senser....witch is what i think it is car runs great....also has an open exahust if that makes a diff...if any one has info to what i could be plz tell so i can get on it i hate seeing engin lights

an obd-1 is an obd-1, it shouldn't to be too old to run a test. if you unplugged your battery it may not have read the codes. if this is the case you will have to drive the car for about 100 miles before you flash the codes again.

Jump the terminals TE1 and E1of the "Data Link Connector 1" with a jumper wire (a paperclip will do).

The diagnostic box is in your engine bay.
It is a grey plastic box.
Open it up and you will see a terminal label under the cap.
Jump TE1 and E1 port with a paper clip or wire.
Turn the key to "ON" position, and see if the engine light blinks.
Example,
** * and repeating, you have code 21
If ** * ***** ** and repeating, you have code 21 and 52

this wont short anything out or damage anything?..............is adjusting my timing only good if i use a higher octain fuel? what if i adjust timing and dont get higher gas...what other side effects is there if i tamper with this, thinking bout setting to 15........what is 91 fuel and up, where can i get it, all i know is unleaded, med unleaded, sup unleaded...i dont have a clue what the numbers mean......what would be the best to set it to i have a 2.2l from a 94 gt............and what is obd-1 and obd-2

edit: sorry for all the quistion...i thought i knew alot about cars but you guys make me feel lower then an amature......i just know how to take em apart and put em back together

Don't mess with the timing yet.
Jumping TE1 and E1 will not harm the car.
It'll just put the ECU in diagnostic mode.
That means, any stored error code in ECU memory will show up.

91 is octane rating of gasoline.
The higher the number, the more difficult it is to self ignited.
Higher octane helps prevent detonation.
I'm sure you will do fine with 87 on 5sfe.

OBD = On Board Diagnostics
94-95 6th gen Celica is OBD I
96+ 6th gen Celica is OBD II
They have different interfaces.
If your car is OBD II, you need to use an OBD II code reader/scanner to read malfunction code.
There is a port to plug in the reader under the steering column.
If your car is OBD I, all you need is a wire or paper clip.

so 87 is super unleaded? does it just depend on where you get ur gas? ex. shell, boltens, 7-11

89 [and 91 IMO] is mid grade
93/94 is premium [super]

Your EGR valve and/or pipe is most likely dirty.
However it could also be the VSV and/or modulator not working.

I got this off a corolla forum.... Just copy and paste, it helped me find mine which is the ufo looking thing in the middle top engine part closest to my windshield

You'll see what's been described as a "UFO looking" object. That is the EGR Vacuum Modulator. Follow the left (as you're looking at it) vacuum hose and it goes down towards the EGR valve. The EGR valve is actually mounted on the engine, about 6" or so below the EGR Vacuum Modulator. Hope this helps!!"


I am having the same 71 CEL code on my car, but the weird part is that it comes on them dims off!
I didnt think the car would 'remember' the code, but sure enough I have the OBD1 and it came up 7-1.
I am going to try to clean mine out today, reset the battery and see if that helps...

No it won't help at all. If you have advanced your timing it will keep your engine from having detonation resulting in burnt valves or holes in the piston. This is why turbocharged cars have to use it is because of the combustion pressures. Advancing your timing will make the spark happen earlier and raise the combustion pressure due to the piston not being at TDC yet when the spark plug is fired.
