I recently came across a (great condition with extremely low mileage) 3000GT VR4... Just wondering what the 6GC community thinks of them. Have any of you owned one?

good friend of mine had one. they go really fast top speed wise. they hang with evo's and sti's. handle high speeds really well, especially ones with active aero. The bad stuff is they are Really heavy, hard to work on, and parts are expensive.

The biggest change going from a celica is how faster the car will be and how less reliable it will be..cant really win eh?

A friend of mine bought a 1992 3000GT VR4 a few years ago.....It's a very heavy, big car with great traction and handling for its size with some serious power. I love the active aero and the looks too, its also the only 90's JDM supercar with all-season capabilities.
However the transmission on his with only 92,000 miles was AFWUL....horrible transmission feedback and sloppy engagement. The engines sound sorta frumpy to me and are horrible to work on, definately not the most user friendly car. -------------------- 3rd gen ST205 3SGTE - Alive and boosting. |

personly i think there very nice cars yes they have there problems just like any car i havents seen to many vr-4's on the side of the road cant say the same for its less powered sister the regular 3000 gt .....i say if you found one with low miles and low price i say do it they are pretty rare pretty fast and can look sexy ...... and you cant beat a tt v6 i mean look at the supra and you get awd wow do the right things to that car and it will be beast
just my thoughts.... |

Alright so the next obvious question is... How difficult is it to replace the tranny. I'm sure its really bad, but just wondering if any of you have had experience or helped your friends.
So I guess I just have to think about whether I'm willing to sacrifice toyota reliability for speed and traction... |

If you cant do the work yourself on the car you better be rich. For my old n/a 3000gt the previous owners were charged $1100 for the 60k timing belt maintence. The trannys are pretty crappy and expensive, the clutches dont last, lots seem to spin rod bearings...they are nice looking cars but can be a nightmare.

Yea, I think I'm gonna stick with the trusty celi for now. I was just looking for some speed, but I really dont think I want to be pouring money into a car thats breaking all the time, when I'm trying to pay for that whole college thing at the same time. haha (my brothers GSX having about 50 million problems in 1 week didnt help Mitsubishi either haha)

A friend of mine had it for about a year and a half...and the car´s CV was as follows;
In a first month he had to change the ABS sensor. Then his regular maintenance included the timing belt change...which took about a week, and cost was waaaaay too much to pay for any car! Then about six months later, the clutch broke, and since the transmission fluids were not exactly a primary concern with the previous owner, needless to say that the whole transmission broke! ...so from then on, the car waited for a new one for about three months! When it was repaired, a few months there was peace and harmony...till the rear diff broke! So, they patched it somehow, and my friend parked it in a garage and advertised it for a few months, untill he finally sold it! I´ve heard that the car exchanged quite a few hands since then! And as for my friend, he bought a 300 ZX Twin Turbo, and never had one single problem since he bought it... Anyway, after driving it on the track, I gave up on the idea of being a fan of the 3000...to me it seemed kinda non responsive, and much more bling than bang, so I gave up wanting to have one for myself! ![]() Oh yeah, I almost forgot...my ST oversteers more than the 3000, which really is kinda bad! ![]() -------------------- ![]() Another proud 6G Celica owner! |

QUOTE(aslearvert @ Jul 27, 2007 - 5:14 PM) Do you like your celi better then? A celica is much more practical and reliable than a 3000gt...especially a vr-4. A vr-4 is faster (obviously) and AWD will go through snow better but big whoop when i would probably be broke most the time anyways ![]() This post has been edited by bufferdan: Jul 30, 2007 - 9:18 AM -------------------- ![]() |

So, it sounds like this car is just trouble... which kind of sucks, cuz its fast. But, I'm perfectly happy with stickin with the celi for awhile.
The car is in a town called Charlotte. |
