My friends Celica, (I think) 89 has a 3sgte from a 94 GT4 (which I'm 100% on). He says it the 180kw/240hp version, but was told buy a mechanic that its on the 140kw/190hp. Does anyone know what part of the engine number tells you anything or I'm assuming that if the 94 and 93 models have different pow ratings which number represents the year.

Stock Celica GT4 ST165 engine (1st gen 3SGTE, 87-89) has 190 hp.
3rd gen engine 94+ has black plastic timing belt cover and vented turbo heat shield. 3rd gen engine don't use AFM, has 8 bolt exhaust manifold and has no TVIS (single runner). Valve covers are also different. -------------------- _Gary

Does anyone have any more info or pics??? Everything is pointing towards it being 190hp but when dyno'd it was about 200hp at the wheels so its deffently got more power.

Just look for the oil filter.
If it points up and is next to the oil dipstick, it is 1st gen engine. If it points down, next to the oil pan, it is 3rd gen engine. Here are some pics of 3rd gen engine -------------------- _Gary
