Hot Brakes on passenger side? Options

I just drove it for about 10 more minutes and now its SMOKING UP and VERY HOTT! maybe a new rotor?

Lift the car up, put it in neutral, and try if you can turn the wheel by hand.
Most likely, it is your caliper.

I will try other stuff later tonite...I just bought the car, and the caliper never did this before (500 miles, never smoked or heated up), only when I changed the brakes did it start smoking.

I inspected the rotor and its VERY uneven...I am going to try new rotors, since they are 3 years old too...then the calipers...should I do both sides?

It depends. If they are not too thin, you can take them to a machine shop or Napa. They might be able to turn the rotors for pretty cheap. If you decide to replace the rotor, you need to replace both sides at the same time. Make sure the piston is pushed back to the original position when you replaced the pad. Did the wheel turn smoothly (by hand) after changing the pads? BTW, you can rebuild the caliper if you want. You don't need to replace both calipers.

that happens every time you put new pads in .. they smoke for about the first 50 miles.. i just put new rotors and pads on and the same thing happened to me.. although.. your rotor could be uneven and making it smoke because of the new pads

Dang, now its smoking on both sides...How do you take the brake rotors off? I can take the caliper off with the 2 bolts on the back, but I cant get the rotor off because of the metal bracket....any trick to taking that off? or do you need to be superman?

you just took off the caliper bolts you have to also remove the caliper bracket bolts. in the future, you can remove the entire assembly by just removing the bolts that hold the caliper brackets (the set you didnt take off).

RCTCelica, going to try that probably tommorow...I think my bolts are on there pretty tight...I really think its just the brake rotors which are REALLY UNEVEN, I can feel a large bump on the rotors. Going to try again tommorow. I have only changed brake pads before on cars, so changing rotors are new to me...I hope this solves it...

i agree, if you really want to do it yourself have someone look over your shoulders. if the bolts are really tight don't just force the ratchet down (stripped bolts), you have to "tap" it lose.

when you say you feel a bump on the rotors, do you feel it on the actually braking surface or on the lip/edge of the rotor?

note: if your going to have to change your calipers (if they seized) make sure you vise-grip your brake lines shut. also, don't forget to bleed the brkes afterwards

my passenger-side lower piston on the bracket was seized too just recently. my braking was pretty bad. so i changed to ceramic pads and brembo brake rotors, then had all four calipers and front caliper brackets remanufactured and all was good again, the end.
