I have a rough idle problem and thought i'd change the spark plugs, i noticed the rightmost sparkplug's thread was covered in oil and the others werent. Only the thread had oil on it. Could this be a leak thats interrupting the spark to that last cylinder? Is there a seal or something I can replace? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like you need a new valve cover gasket. The 7A-FE has four o-rings that go inside the valve cover and seal the spark plug area from oil. You'll need to take the screws off the top and pry up the little washers underneath of them and remove the plastic trim that runs over the top of the valve cover. Your valve cover should come off. You'll want to replace ALL of the gaskets in/on the valve cover.

Yep, my MR2 did the same thing. Didn't run rough though. Unless the electrode on the spark plug's covered in oil, that won't cause rough idling. Check your plugs/leads -------------------- |

My impreza had this issue, easy fix, new O rings, valve cover gasket, easy on a inline 4 banger because there all up top, I had 2 on each side since its an flat 4 motor, very crampted space when taking the cover off regardless, not a huge problem just general upkeep. should be less then an hours work, when I did mine it was 5 hours, but also did the timing belt at the same time.
the gasket kit for this job cost me $38 ish from B&B auto parts. (over 100 from the dealer and they sold me the wrong parts thus went to b&b.) -------------------- |
