Basically I'm looking to have the most tire possible touching the pavement.
Plan to run 17x8.5 wheels with whatever drag radial rubber I can find for a good value.
I have a friend who runs a little too wide tires for his car, the only problems that he has are 3 point turns and hard U turns. considering we have a pretty tight radius now, I wouldn't mind sacrificing some radius for GRIP.
I'll just have to drive it like a truck or something lol.

So first off, is it possibly? anyone running 8.5" wheels front and back? and what offset is needed to pull it off?

hrm thats a good question, i plan on 8.5" fronts as well.
what wheel are you thinking about using for that application?

but according the Justin's write up

lowered = 46mm offset
stock = 35mm offset

could always fender mod, and go for wider wheels with a 0 offset laugh.gif

Yeah i dont mind dremeling away some of the fenders biggrin.gif or anything else that gets in the way. anyone have some wheels they wanna let me borrow for test fitting tongue.gif

if you're going to go all out on the offset and such why not invest in a quality LTW wheel, that you can order the correct offset?

but i know its easy to say when i'm not writing the check laugh.gif

Haha exactly. the only thing is, i have heavy wheels now, and they dont bother me. they still spin real easy lol, so maybe if i was a civic with 97lbs of torque it would matter. but i could care less. biggrin.gif

heavier wheels won't add to your traction.
but they will slow you down.

standing difference might be ~5-15lbs
but rotational mass difference is MUCH more.
the amount of time you'll cut will benefit you.
esp if you are going from a roll

yeah, I know they wont add traction. didn't mean to imply that. I'm just saying, to me anyways, that the possibly 25 pounds i could save by buying light weight wheels for that fraction of a second acceleration just isn't worth the extra money that come with them.

Also I have the power to put that rotational mass in motion fairly quick as it is, the lighter the wheel the faster ill get it in motion, the faster id loose traction, correct? you are 100% correct though less rotational mass is always a plus. I'm just broke. wheel sponsorship perhaps lol.

but the ltw the wheel the better you would be able to increase movement from a starting position (be it rolling or standing). It could very well make it a bit more difficult to maintain traction...but thats what DR are for biggrin.gif
oh lighter wheels = less broken axels?! haha less stress i dunno lol

in order to fit 8.5 rims on the car, you would need to have the fenders rolled AND cut the lip out in the rear fender.

john, if your gonna run 225/45/17 DR's, why not go with a 17x8?
IMO with your anticipated power level, your gonna want the tallest tire you can fit under there to try and get a little more out of the s54 gearing.
rolling the front fenders, and cutting the rears wont be a problem for ya.
the only rubbing issue ive ever had was touching the inner fender plastic at full lock.
but, then again thats with 225/45 street tires on a 17x7 rim.

i have custom 18x8.5 work emotion cr-kai with a +32 offset and a 60.00 wheel curvature. as for tires i'm using 225/40/18's all around.

at this moment, i have no rubbing at all (i have a 2 finger gap between the tire and fender). i still need to lower the coils a bit more.

once i do that i'll let you know how that outcome will be.
