I want to put some rear speakers in my car, since the previous owner took them out, and was wondering how to go about doing that. I don't see any how-to's for it, so what panels need to be taken off, what size are they, and is there any custom work necessary?

6.5" work, but you need to modify the brackets. Essentialy, you need to take out the back seats, both the bench and the backs. Then you remove the little latch that the backs clip into, then there are i think 4 or 5 screws that you have to remove, remove your door sills *not nessasary but is easier*, then you just give the top section of the bottom plastic a good tug and the pannel should come right off. Then there are 3 bolts holding the mount in place *if you have it*. Next after you have removed the mount and unplugged the speaker connection *little clip*, you take the old speakers out, cut the wiring. Then find the right size adaptor for your new 6.5"s *the 6.5"s holes wont line up, so you need an adaptor plate usually*, then your gonna need to trim down the bracket *use a mini-hacksaw, or a hacksaw and a dremill*, fit your speakers in, soilder them back up, screw em in, and then do every thing for taking it apart in reverse. This is what mine looked like when i put em together...

whole thing should probably take you an hour and a half depending on how well you know your car. The worst part about it is fittin the speakers/modifying the mounts. That took me about a good hour on the first side and then about 15 min on the other.

I just used a bench grinder and shaved everything down so it was all flat were the speaker touches the brackets. took me bout a half hour to get it all done.

I replaced my rear speakers without taking out the seats at all. I just removed the speaker grill, took out the one long screw that holds the panel in, removed the screw at the back where the seat latches, and pulled the panel away from the side. I had tons of room to get a socket wrench in there and remove the entire bracket.

I replaced my rear speakers with 5 1/4's though so I had to fab a bracket which takes a bit longer but is far from difficult.

how did you remove the grill? and when you put it bck on did it fit like new? And as far as the bracket goes, there is some guy that sells nice brackets for like 6 a pop or somethin. pretty cheap tongue.gif I know cause i spent a day making one, then the other took an hour but still, i could spare 6 for that time biggrin.gif

The speaker grill in the back? You just take something skinny and preferably blunt and stick it in the gap around the edge of the grill and gently pop it out. It's held on by 4 clips that easily go back in. and yes, mine fit quite tight.

I've made brackets a number of times on my old car so I was more than ready to do it again. The speakers fit and sound great but my only issue is that they are components and I have no home yet for the fairly big tweeters (they won't even fit in the stock front tweeter location they are too big).

I'm considering making a mock coax speaker by using some angle iron and attaching it to the MDF surround and bringing it in front of the woofer. Either that or I will bit the bullet and just mount it to the side of the angled wall between the speaker and the grill using the angled tweeter mounts to keep them as close to straight as I can. I try to avoid drilling holes in my car whenever I can. smile.gif

I meant to take pictures of them, so I should probably get on it.
