Thats called a blow-off valve
it releases pressure from the intake to prevent the turbo from spinning backwards it makes the pretty wshhhhhhh sound you can add them to any turbo application do yo homework --------------------

Well, I don't know that those cars have a blow-off valve...but a blow-off valve sort-of makes that kind of sound. I've always heard a sound more like a "pshhhh..."

either way you put it wshhh or pshhhh, a blow off valve makes the noise
of releasing pressurized air, most cars come with some sort blow off valve. this is to prevent damage to the turbo --------------------

yup but its a cheap mod, relativly but on the st185, it has a MAF, and open atmosphere BOV's(the ones that make the noise to where you can hear it all the time) can cause stalling problems one engines with MAF's the st205 engine has a BOV, and runs a MAP. -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

With that MAF, usually when the motor stalls its due to the fact that the BOV is too loose and needs to be tightened. Also, the newer BOVs (I.E. SSQ by HKS) are aware of that problem, and more equipped to prevent it, but its a very good point to bring up. You dont wanna stall going 90 on the highway.

Here's the thing, the MR2 also has the AFM like the Celica (not a MAF) and it has a blow off vavle. These BOV's dont vent to atmosphere, but re-route the air back into the intake (just after the AFM) so that the air is still in the system.
In this configuration, the car wont stall out and the turbo keeps its spool while shifting - imagine the clean, compressed air exiting the turbo, going through the IC then coming right back into the turbo retaining its speed. HKS has an adapter for their SSQBOV to acomplish this as well. The down side (for some) is that the BOV sound you like to hear is much quieter in this setup. I've seen used MR2 BOV's for as low as $40. They have proven themselve's good for up to 30psi of boost (Sport Compact Car's MR2 buildup used the stock BOV during the complete 500+HP buildup). The Celica All-Trac on the other hand did not get a BOV. Why? Because the car was not meant to be a high-production performance vehicle. It was only released to allow Toyota to compete in WRC. In fact, no TRD parts were available for the Celica until the MR2 was released. -------------------- Scott
