So since my move to the mainland i have been doing a bit more fast driving (hawaii isnt really good for that). Hard to tell when the problem really surfaced though. When driving down over 70mph for 15+ minutes in the florida heat my engine will start to run hot. the needle sneaks up to the red, i put on the heater and the needle goes back to its home. At first i thought this was a cooling problem but the engine is running at 4k's around 80... which seems kinda high to me.
It only operates like this in the high speeds and if the air outside is 85+. I replaced the radiator about 18 months ago along with the pump and most of the hoses. The fan is kicking on. The thermostat has been replaced. And no-one here including our mechanic... can figure it out. Sorry so long but I'm hoping one of you guys may have run up on a problem like this and can help me find out what the hell is wrong with my baby . thanx in advance for all your help |

you check your coolant levels lately? could be lower than you think.
i wouldn't expect year old stuff to fail so soon. -------------------- |

check ur coolant, make sure those no air in the lines, then if u are driving right when u turn on the heater it goes down, what happens if u turn it back off right away, does it shoot right back up?

Air bubbles or low on coolant.

If you have been using the 50/50 mix you should be fine on coolant just add more of that mix.
If you have been using the Mix-It-Yourself you might want to invest in a tool that reads your mixture level and indicates if you mixed it right. (it looks like a water dropper with a ball inside, should be around $5 bucks at auto-stores) Otherwise, stop over-revving. |

I see you haven't replied yet. so I would check your reservoir bucket and make sure nothing is leaking from there. and also double check the tightness of all your clamps. Sometimes sitting for a while with no use then starting can make them a little loose.. so yea let us know what you found yea?

Does the needle actually REACH the red?
I'm asking because a while back I thought I had the same problem. In the high heat of Texas, I was driving for 15+ minutes at 75-85 mph. My needle would start sneaking towards the red, but it would never actually go there. I was concerned so I took it to a mechanic and he told me it was normal for old cars' needles to move like that. If it doesn't actually reach the red I wouldn't be worried about it. -------------------- |

I have replaced the fluid since because i checked the lower hose coming out of the radiator. the fluid levels are good. I dont think it has ever gone into the red, i usually make sure to flip on the heater before it gets to that. I havent taken it out to check the flip on flip off heater test.
Thanks for your suggestions but i have gotten past the easier parts of this problem. |

My '94 GT does the same thing, and I would also like to know why. It only overheats at high speeds when the engine is "cruising" at 4,000 rpm for an extended period of time, so personally I think that this is the cause of the problem. So now I just don't go faster than 65 mph. It pisses people off on the freeway, but my engine is cool and my gas mileage has never been better.

You can always try investing in a Koyo aluminum radiator. Wouldn't hurt to keep the cooling system cooler then it already is, especially for long distance, high rpm driving. Like everyone is saying, check for air, loose clamps, and also the coolant overflow reservoir. How is it during stop and go traffic?

weird, i've driven long distances at high rpm and never had a problem. i wonder if your water pump is going and this is the first symptoms of it?

there is no problem in stop and go traffic... i have managed to get the temp up past normal under 70 but that was going fast with alot of stop and go with quick acceleration. I will check the hoses again and for bubbles but im not losing any water. Does 4k at 80 not sound high to anyone else?

A couple of things to look at is if there is anything cloging airflow throught your radiator. If you had your AC on at the same time then I would look at the condensor and then radiator.
