Well I am probably getting custom exhaust this week and need to know what size pipe to go with... I will be swapping in a 3s-gte pretty soon and need to know the best pipe for that aplication, i really dont care if it cuts performance on my 5s-fe for the time being. I was thinking 3" pipe, high flow cat, and the hks muffler. I just need to know if 3" is to big for the 3s-gte and how bad it will cut performance on my 5s.

3" is perfect. but eliminate the cat's when you swap the motor. and definately go with HKS

but a high flow cat for now would be fine right? and is it totaly necisary to eliminate them with the swap, or is it just because I wont be smog legal already so might as well?

that's just up to you. It depends on how soon your going to do the swap. if it's gonna be real soon, might as well just eliminate it now. if not, then get a hi-flow cat for a while until you do the swap.

now, for the cat's, that's really up to you. You don't have to eliminate them, but you can. The reason I did was because i'm trying to get the most power out of my motor as possible. And your right. The motor is NOT smog legal, so it realy does'nt matter if you take the cat's off, cause if you get caught, your ****** either way.

first off, it will become a huge pain in the ass if you fail smog.

what i say you do, is go to a small independant smog tester and talk to the guy.

i have a friend that owns his own shop with one of the new smog testing machines. my dad and him are both from the same country and they always talk.

no matter what i do to my car, he will pass the car for me. he has a honda civic DX sitting about 25ft from the tester, he will run that car and enter mine into the computer.

BTW, i think a new law was passed that says a cop can use his own judgement on whether an exhaust system is too loud.

and if he takes a peek under your car and sees no cat, YOU ARE SCREWED.

taking off the cats will help power wise, but high flow cats are almost as good as test pipes, and a lot quiter.

it depends on how loud you want your car and if you have a friend that will pass the car for you.

if you cant get some one to pass the car, go retake the emissions test, so that you will have 2 yrs till the next test.

damn... i hate stupid aircare...

when i get my car and swap the engine, will it be impossible to pass aircare? is the engine really that harmful? i think the aircare up here (in BC Canada) is a little less strict than other places but it still bites the big one...

what are some ways around this problem? frown.gif

I will prolly just keep the high flow cat... I dont want it loud, I want it for better performance. I will also buy the silencer for the hks muffler

dont get a silencer, just have a high flow cat and a resonator installed and it will keep the car from being loud.

as for aircair,

im not too sure about laws up in Canada, but im pretty sure the laws are similar.

the engine itself is not at all poluting. infact, JDM engines are cleaner running that USDM and canada engines.

its just that there are certain emissions things that are missing, like an EGR setup

i dunno, i might have a couple of hookups here for when i do get everthing done... i'll have to look more into it after getting the car and before the swap rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

would it be possible to put in the items that are missing to make it pass aircare? would it be worth putting them in and taking them out for that one day every year? rolleyes.gif

Below 300 HP, 2.5" and 3" exhaust really wont make a difference. Either way, be sure to use all mandrel bent tubing. I ditched all the cats and the pre-muffler on my ST185, and installed a HKS Hyper muffler and a huge resonator (all 3"). It's a little loud, but not too bad.

If you want a 3" high-flow cat, I'll sell you mine. I bought it but never installed it. $40 shipped.

Go for the 3" exhaust. If you get a high flow cat you won't need a resonator. The cat will dampen the sound. I have a 3" downpipe and exhaust with my swap, and the resonator does it's job just fine. I imagine the cat would dampen the sound a little more than a resonator would. One problem you may have. I don't know if the 5s exhaust mates up to the same place as the 3sgte. I think it would be about the same place. Anyone know?

ya, i've heard that with the 3sgte the best way to go is custom piping and that the down pipe is the major difference

well then I will get the downpipe later when I get the engine I supose...

I already bought the muffler, HKS one, the biger one with 3" pipe in to it... is $235 a good price?

I bought the Apexi N1 muffler for $205 shipped. There will be a downpipe on the engine you import. I bought an aftermarket downpipe b/c it's incrediblely less restrictive. So once you get the engine, go get your custom exhaust bent, and later if you want to get the aftermarket downpipe, it will bolt on to your custom bent exhaust.

W00T!!!! The shop I went to today said they could do the custom piping for $280... kinda high. They said to just go ahead and eliminate the cat, and they could set up a mock one if I was worried about cops lookin for it. They also said they could prolly do my swap, find me a clip, and have everything running, labor they said would be about $1600.

ALSO!!! here is the W00T PART!!!! They said for $300 if I left the car with them for one day they would get the smog certificate with passing for the car, no matter how bad emisions might be! I was with Toyceli8 (David) and they said this to both of us!

well then, looks like youre all set, lol

so for about $2200, they will do all the labor of the swap, custom 3 inch exhaust with gutted cat, and get you smog certificate.

thats not that bad.

what gen 3sgte are you going for?

wouldnt hurt to pay the $150 up front on a turbo timer. they really are helpful.

sounds like a good and expensive plan
