Currently rebuilding my 5SFE and I am taking my block to the local machine shop. $30 per cylinder. Would there be any significant increase if I went .02 (.5mm) over? Also what else would I need besides new pistons and rings?

apparantly this is more complicated than that (or is it?). i've been reading that if I change the bore I have to change the rods which would mean changing/moding the crank. is all this necessary or can I just bore it, throw in some pistons and be done with it?
what else can be done during a rebuild to help this lackluster engine? anything? plans were: Aluminum Flywheel CAI (90-93 Accord) Headers Exhaust This post has been edited by cv7713: Oct 19, 2007 - 4:58 PM |

Bare minimum... new pistons and rings (should include new pins too). You don't need to change the rods or the crank... so long as you buy the proper pistons. Recommended, check main/rod bearing clearances, all new seals, new oil pump, etc.

thanks. plans include the following:
possible bore .02 over (not sure, need some more suggestions) new pistons, rings, bearings, seals (whole bottom end basically) reman head oil pump, water pump, timing belt, thermostat lighter flywheel and new clutch qeustion: if I want to boost the 5s in the future, how would the .02 bore effect things??? any ideas? |

You can look at it as a slight increase in displacement, but for the most part, it's normal maintenance as far as overbores go since it's a small. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... QUOTE(cv7713 @ Oct 19, 2007 - 11:38 PM) should I shave a little bit off of the head? You can... again, considered maintenance... but if you plan to turbo... probably best not to because machining to head can somewhat increase compression. -------------------- "It's ok to be naked girl... I was thinking for a while about doing the 3sgte swap but a few of my buddys tell me just rebuild the 5sfe with some beefy internal work and turbo the motor cause they said i would save more money and it would be a lot easier cause there wouldnt be any wire harness problems and why would i drop down in motor size why not just keep the 2.2L im still undecided so if you could help let me know and thank you!!

that's completely personal preference. what do you need the car for? daily driver? weekend car? I would have to say the 3SGTE would be a more reliable boost option (however a bit more pricey). people suggest to have approx $4-5k for the swap. I've heard of people turboing the stock (no new internals) 5SFE for roughly $2k. however if you plan on beefing the internals you will probably reach the price of the 3S swap which would be easier and alot more upgradable down the line. how much hp do you want? if 180-200 is sufficient, then the 5S would be a good choice. decide what you want, do your research, map the pros and cons, and make an informed decision. the 3S has been known to produce well over 300hp+...
good luck. read the stickies and forums and it will help you with your decision. |
