Virgin post!

Hey guys, my name is Joe, I (sadly!) don't own a Celica, but my good friend does. I own a 1g Eagle Talon AWD. (Another friend owns a Celica more my style, an All-Trac, quite nice). The other friend owns a 1996 Celica GT.

The story goes is that I am the gear head that gets the phone calls from friends when their car is having trouble. My friend with the 96 GT is having horrible trouble. He purchased it within the past year. Started leaking oil from a few different places. Now it doesn't want to start and he is complaining of metal on metal noise.

So I called the usual people I know in search of a 1996 Celica GT motor to simply swap back in and discard the old motor. It seems though this motor only appeared in 2 different years of the Celica. He believes it is a 5afe (2.2L DOHC). After reading your motor swaps (do/ do not work) page, it would seem that there are a few engines that would work for a swap. Is this assumption correct?

I usually can get motors for around $300-$700, but this motor does not seem that readily available (thus price goes up). Satan (the dealer) and another shop quoted him around $1200 to repair, which was before the 'metal on metal' noise started. I imagine the price just went up. He is going to have them look at it again this week to get a new estimate.

I have not been over to check it out, but will be this weekend. Can you fellas suggest a motor that is readily available and is at the lower end of the price range? From your experience what does a daily driver swap run vs. and upgrade on these cars? From my experience dropping a turbo motor in is going to require quite a bit of modifying and upgrading (ECU, inter cooler, injectors, etc), does that stand as well for this car?

This is his daily driver and would like to return it to just that if possible, but I figured I would look into an upgrade, maybe not force inducted but maybe a step up in power. He believes the motor is a 5afe (2.2L, DOHC), which I could not find, I only found the 5sfe. Again, I will be going over this weekend to check out the car, and see what motor it is.

I appreciate the time in reading this, I am unfamiliar with these cars but have the know how and tools for cars to help my friend out, who does not have either. I came here just simply because I figure what better place to find this information out than the people who have already done this. Any advice or pointers, appreciated.

Thanks!

5AFE

88-92 Corolla, Replaces 4AFE(injectors on Cylinder Head), FI
92-95 Corolla, Replaces 4AFE(injectors on Intake Manifold), FI

celicas must have 5SFE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5S-FE

Please make sure you have the right engine. Are u in US?

Toyota Motor Corporation has produced a wide variety of automobile engines. The company follows a simple naming system for their modern engines:

The first numeric characters specify the engine block's generation
The next one or two letters specify the engine family
The suffix (separated by a dash) specifies the features of the engine:
Suffix Feature
A Valvetronic variable lift intake head
B Twin SU-style side-draft carburetors
C Carburated / California Emissions Controlled
D Twin Downdraft carburetors
E Electronic Fuel injection
F Economy narrow-angle DOHC
G Performance wide-angle DOHC
H High compression like 9.8:1 (example: 5E-FHE)
High pressure charged (example: 2L-THE)
I Single-point fuel injection
J Autochoke (Early models) or unknown pollution control
L Transverse
M Philippines' market (meaning unknown)
N CNG fuel
P LPG fuel
R Low Compression (For 87 and below octane fuel)
S Swirl intake (1980s)
SE Direct injection (1990s)
T Turbocharged
U With Catalytic converter Japan-spec emissions
V Common Rail Diesel Injection (D-4D)
X Atkinson cycle (typically also indicates a Hybrid engine, as Toyota only uses the Atkinson cycle with hybrids)
Z Supercharged

For Example

4A-GE
4 - 4th Generation Engine In The A Engine Family
A - The Engine Family it is in
G - Wide-angle dual camshaft
E - Electronically Fuel Injected

22R-TEC
22 - 22nd Generation Engine In The R Engine Family
R - The engine family it is in
T - Turbocharged
E - Electronically Fuel Injected
C - California Emission Controlled

The A engine is

1978 - A - SOHC/DOHC
1978-1979 - 1.5 L (1452 cc) 1A
1979-1986 - 1.3 L (1295 cc) 2A
1979-1988 - 1.5 L (1452 cc) 3A
1980-1998 - 1.6 L (1587 cc) 4A
1987-1998 - 1.5 L (1498 cc) 5A This is what you ask for The 5AFE is the JDM motor from the Corolla. I think. Maybe some JDM celicas. i dunno
1989-1992 - 1.4 L (1397 cc) 6A
1993-1998 - 1.8 L (1762 cc) 7A

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-CORO...tem220162318492

our S engine is

1982 - S - SOHC/DOHC
1982-1988 - 1.8 L (1832 cc) 1S
1982-1987 - 2.0 L (1995 cc) 2S
1985-2005 - 2.0 L (1998 cc) 3S
1987-1998 - 1.8 L (1838 cc) 4S
1990-1995 - 2.2 L (2164 cc) 5S this is on the celica

Yeah, he doubled checked and it is the 5s-fe instead of the 5a-fe. Thanks for straightening that out.

So if I am looking for a 5s-fe, what are the differences in 90-95 and 96+ motors? From the Wiki, HP is the only difference it lists, but what about bolting in, any knowledge on that? Are there any other bolt in options instead of the 5sfe if we come up short handed on our search?

Just from experience with DSMs there was a few other motors that could be very easily swapped in. Or is this the best motor to stick with in this case?

Thanks again.
