Well, like the title says, how would you guys rate the difficulty of replacing the axles on a 94 st? I just bought this car for my girl a while ago and I've been workin on it bit by bit to get it into a nice safe operating condition for her. I was thinkin about doin this myself cuz I don't wanna get raped by a shop, but I've never done it before. I'm reasonably good with mechanics its just that I don't have alot of time(or a place for that matter) to get it done, unless its a quick easy fix, I'll probably have to bite the bullet. Haynes manual makes it seem easy enuff, but I wanna know for sure before I start rippin stuff apart. (Btw replacing em cuz cv joints are shot, horrible, disgusting clicking in turns)
Also as a side note, I've been reading that places like autozone and the like sells axles that are too short. Any recommendations as to the best place to get 'em? (Besides the Dealer) |

i heard is a good place. and i dont think it should be to hard. take the wheels off take the cotter pin out loosen that nut that holds the axle to the hub and u might have to unconnect the tie rod i am not sure some how you need to get it out then u slide the other end out of the tranny i was told though that u might want to replace the seals that goes in the tranny where the axles go while u are in there so u wont have a leak later and you dont have to do the same process for some little seals. |

I'll be orderin those axles tomorrow. the drivers axle will require some technique to it. with a prybar, push upwards and then with a mallet give a steady blow, there is a pin holding it siside the transmission. the passenger side needs 6 bolts removed. good luck.... -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... it took my 1hr and 20 mins for the driver's side................ oh and watch out for the tranny juice.........took a shower with some ATF juice instead of gear oil!!!! FTW!!!! in my manual tranny............. synchromesh anyone??? -------------------- I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island

the likelyhood of everything going your way, is high since yours is newer than his i think the hardest part will be holding everything up so you can attach it together... I used jacks to raise everything

Cool. Appreciate the info guys. Just waitin on the axles to arrive and then it begins. And yes, I'll take a ATF bath over gear oil anyday. I hate even the thought of flushing the tranny on my GT cuz gear oil sux. In that respect alone, I'll work on my girl's auto tranny all day.

LOL, what did his nationality, age, and body constitution have to do with putting ATF in your manual tranny? Anyway, if I'm buying a car, I question the person like if I was some sort of FBI agent, and I check every single little thing, including fluids. I don't know how you managed to drive it for six months without being in the complete know.
By the way, the extensions look great on your car. Hmmm, so that's how they were going to look on mine if I didn't sell them to you? -------------------- |

ok what are you supposed to use in a manual st and how many quarts?? also what do you use in a auto st and how much? also the drain hole is on the drivers side correct? and the fill hole is on the front of the tranny on drivers side correct? they are both massive bolts?
