I know this sounds evil and all...but if congress ever made a law to make every car a hybrid I'm leaving the country.

QUOTE(GriffGirl @ Dec 11, 2007 - 7:03 PM) SUVs rolling over is SO late 80s, left over from the crappy wheel base that the first Ford Explorers got when SUVs first gained popularity. The truth of the fact is that SUVs, in terms of safety, have the same variance of safety ratings that sedans have, and are probably (without actually looking it up right now) a hell of a lot safer than our little sport coupes. They're comfortable and convenient, and we Americans love our comfort and convenience. The truth of the matter is that it really isn't SUVs any more that are the culprit of where we are today with our dependency on foreign oil. SUVs are getting better and better mileage with each generation, I believe the average MPG for an SUV is about 21; what's the average MPG for a car? Probably about 25. There's some disparity there, but not enough to really site SUVs as the culprit of the evil OPEC and our relentless need for more more more foreign oil and supreme rule over the universe (as long as it's got something we want though, right?). The culprit is us - we as a nation "elect" officials who are bought by big oil and corporate lobbyists looking out for their own selfish needs. The Good Ole' U.S. of A. has got the best damn government money can buy. And this is where it's gotten us. I personally believe one part of the solution lies in alleviating our dependency on foreign oil by research and development of alternative energy sources, including for our automobiles. Why hasn't there been more done for the hydrogen fuel cell? Why is it even a QUESTION that Congress should enact legislation to require the average MPG for cars be 35? Why aren't ALL new cars hybrids? If Congress can enact a bill to switch our damn televisions over from analog to digital AND subsidize households with two $40 off vouchers for the converter boxes for the 10% left who DON'T have cable or Sattelite TV, why can't Congress require ALL motor vehicles (maybe not motorcycles) use hybrid technology? I don't give a **** about Halliburton or the likes and what they stand to lose if this were to happen! Sorry so long winded... I just really think this particular issue is indicative of a much greater problem out there. My love for you grows on a daily basis -------------------- "He won't come out of the bathroom. QUOTE(fastgt @ Dec 11, 2007 - 9:55 AM) ^ I don't know a lot of people who drive suvs and dream of racing laguna seca...... meaning I'm sure people who drive these cars are fully aware of the limits of these cars. Given there are a few who are completly dumb and cannot drive for crap. Ill be honest, I drive a small bmw coupe and whenever a suv comes up next to me my butt puckers up real good cuz I'm scared they will not see me and hit me but I'm not going to sit here and say I hate them. My mother drives a 4 runner but we do have a large family. My dad owns a dodge truck, which I like to drive in fact. But then again we do alot of outdoor activities so its use is justifiable. Just because SUVs have a bad rap for rolling, or demolishing a small car in an accident doesnt make them bad....in fact if you used that logic for all cars, no one would drive anything. No I dont want to buy that sports car because they go fast and they will cause accidents. No I don't want that toyota yaris becuase one hit and Im a sardine. As a matter of fact when I have kids I already told my gf that she will not be driving anything smaller than a merc ml of gl suv. I know she can drive, better than any female I know so I feel safe giving her an suv. All I'm saying is don't blame the car blame the driver True that homeslice. -------------------- Note to new members. Discussions such as the ones below are forbidden.

I'm kinda with Shogunkid. If someone wants to spend a lot of money on gas, why not let them? You want to spend less on gas, go for it.
If its morally wrong to use more gas, then all of us on this forum would be guilty- there are cars that get a lot better gas mileage than celicas do, and I think we would certainly have to shut down any talk about modifying them to get more power. Also- meets are out of the question, thats a useless waste of oil. So all you whiners complaining about other people using up your precious gas- as soon at you buy a geo-metro, never go for fun drives, and always use a bicycle around town, maybe I'll listen to what you have to say. Otherwise, you're imposing a double standard based on some illogical left-field ideas. Are there people who drive SUV's who are jerks? Yes. Should some of them learn to not use compact spaces? Of course! Do we all wish those who ride our bumpers would back off at night before our eyes are totally ruined? Totally. But is that because they drive an SUV or is it just because some people are jerks? Any argument along those lines is based on a per accidens property, nothing per se wrong. Give me an argument that morally disqualifies SUV's and maybe I'll listen. Until then, I'll keep going on the occasional pleasure drive, driving my less than fuel efficient celica, and driving, perhaps a couple miles an hour too fast- because I like to, and I'm willing to pay the extra fuel costs. QUOTE(CelicaST_CALI @ Dec 11, 2007 - 6:46 PM) people need to stop thinking about just them self and need to start thinking about the effects on other people and the long term affects to planet earth... Then sell your celi, donate the money to some environmental agency, and buy a geo metro. Those things get like twice the gas mileage that celi's do. If you don't do that, then you too are one of those people concerned only with yourself, right? I really don't see how we can be pointing fingers at SUV owners on this site. This is a car enthusiast site- we're all about using fuel for fun. Our degree or "guilt" might vary from person to person on this site, but if it is morally wrong to waste gas, then we are all guilty. If we're not guilty, then it must be the case that it is not morally wrong to waste gas. And thus, the horns of dilemma. We're guilty, or, its not wrong to waste gas. Pick your poison, but you can't have your cake and eat it too on this issue. -------------------- psalm 69 |

In SUV's defense....
1) the new 2008 ford escape hybrid gets up to 34 MPG on city driving http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/2008escapehybrid/ 2) i too am guilty of gas guzzling. my sky redline gets 18 mpg on average, pretty bad for a 4 banger. but it does go to 60 in less than 5 seconds. i dont think this thread was aimed at the gasoline issue. rather the small percentage of drivers out there who use their vehicle as an excuse to think that they own the road. sometimes its uncanny the similarities between a vehicle's size and the driver's ego but one needs to remember its only a fraction of the total amount of suv drivers, which are decent drivers. -------------------- |

this forum was not about attacking each other. It was just about the fact that I did not like the big cars. If you need to have one and seriously justify it, then you deserve to. BUt if you are all about I want the big car then that is pathetic. I celica might not get the best gas mileage but it certainly gets more than any suv. Many people on this country are all about the bigger the better and to be honest, it annoys me. My family has all toyotas because ther're good cars. Number one in the world.
