Im just wondering if anyone can give me info on the 3s-ge beams vs a gt4 conversion. Im new to all this and am considering an engine swap. I currently own a 94 convertible.

The BEAMS red-top is a 2.0l VVT-i with 197 bhp and will give a 0-60 of somewhere better than 7.5 seconds. The 3SGTE is a 2.0l engine based on the 3SGE but with the addition of a turbocharger. It has been slightly redesigned to take the turbocharger, so turbocharging a regular 3SGE isn't exactly the same. The 3SGTE is capable of 239-251bhp from the factory (depending on intended market, CAT, ECU used and so on). In a GT4 it achieves 0-60 of 6.3 seconds and a maxmum speed of 152 mph. Obviously, without 4WD those figures will be somewhat lower. If you want to modify the bodywork (optional and independent of the engine swap), there are plenty of threads that describe how to change the bumper and hood for the GT4 version and there is a sticky with a complete list of parts needed to do the work. Use the search engine to find the relevant threads if you are interested in going down this route (it is a well-trodden path ) And before you ask, while it is possible to 4WD a regular GT or ST, the chassis is different and requires so much custom fabrication that (a) it works out much more expensive than simply getting a GT4 in the first place; and (b) only the hardcore mechanic is capable of doing the mod with any likelihood of moderate success. hmmm, ok thanks for the reply and input. i understand that there is some modification to be done but maybe was unaware that the front end itself has to be fabricated. i would have bought a gt4 but opted for the 'rare' (in australia anyway) convertible instead thinking i could always make it faster.
i have been given a quote for roughly $8500aus for the 3s-gte conversion and an estimate of $12500 including awd and brake upgrade, can you tell me if this is a good quote? Im under the impression the price always changes during the work! lol! also if this is a 'not the best idea' for my convertible could you give me advice on what options i may have to make it faster? my budget is around $10,000aus...cheers |

Ok shortly what you need for make BEAMS swap I did swap on GT (st202) I know you have convertible ..... first what parts You need for swap to GT .... (3s-ge 3gen ---> 3s-ge beams 4gen engine) 1. BEAMS a) (best chose is RedTop manual from celica st202 jdm .... but can be from mr2) b) Can be SilverTop -auto (lower price but You need change gearbox to S54, and ecu ... ) This topic is longer story ..... only if someone really interested 2. Air intake + MAF sensor (beams -> right ) 3. Y-pipe (beams bellow) 4. You need cut and make longer wiring (about 1m ...RHD to LHD conversion) (I will make photo later) When You swapping to celica with 1.8 , 2.2 engines you need : 5. Transaxle from 3s-ge 6. gearbox control lines --You need little fabricate it to fit beams gearbox (S54) from 2.0 GT (S54) from left orginal from 2.0 GT next two are fabricated from 1.8 .... ready 7.
