so in you guys experience what is better or more fun to use when it comes to turbo? It can be from any standpoint relible, less work to keep running, better performance, availibility, wich one blows easier? Feel free to just add your .02 cents personal experiences and even time slips.

(if a thread like this already exists disregard this one)

Its an impossible question to answer. In theory a factory turbo motor is more reliable then an aftermarket turbo kit for an NA motor. But in reality people tend to cheap out and cut corners on both projects, and that normally results in problems with either setup.

i would take a stock turbo car over a n/a turboed car any day for the simple fact that it was built for the power.....for instance if i had the choice between a 2002 srt-4 and a neon r/t turbo.... and they were both puttin down the same amount of hp and runnin about the same time id take the srt-4 for the reliability factor and it's going to last longer....just my .02

Lagos answered it best. Impossible to say. (and timeslips wouldn't matter)

Some will say the 3s, others the 5s. It's all a matter of opinion.

Reliability is what parts you use and how well you stay on top of it. A 3s will blow the same as a 5s.

the question realy is a thought one but after seacrhing throught this site and the mr2 site and the alltrac owners site.our cars can benifit from either mod,the 3s swap or turbo'n the 5s.it all comes down to how much time and money you are going to put into the prject.i wanted to swap for the 3sgte, but after considering it all i just think that boostin the 5s is more sutable for me.if something goes wrong with a 3sgte motor part it is an imported motor witch means you would need to stock up on imported motor replacement parts

ok, so continuing with turboing the 5s, ive seen a couple of guys put in aftermarket camshafts, forged pistons, etc.

I have almost 160 in my car, i will have the engine rebuilt soon for turbo. But i would like to make the engine stronger. What is the major weakness of the 5s that can be dealt with aftermarket parts. Or is it just a waste of money and no matter what you do the engine still is weak?

Anybody with an input?

lets say investing no more than 3 to 4 k in preparing the engine....

head design
having a slave cam (no individual cam tunability)
rods
compression ratio
oil squirters under the pistons (stolen from a 3sgte and added to a 5sfe block)

by the time you fix all that it probably would've been better to just get a 3sgte and stroke it.

with ~3500 for motor work, you could order a fully built longblock, with stage III headwork, from mcs.
that would be:
forged pistons
3s rods, with the 5s crank machined down to accept them.
1mm OS valves, springs, and porting blah blah.
throw in a 450-600$ set of cams.
then you'd have a longblock that could handle about as much boost as you would ever wanna run in a 6gc.
THEN, another 1500-2k for EMS, + tuning,
and a BIG turbo, and you'd be making more power than you'd ever need in a FWD celica.

for my opinion i'd rather go with the 3sgte because it is more reliable.

laugh.gif haha just from being a former Alltrac guy, this comment made me laugh laugh.gif . But you can't really say what's more "dependable". Most would say 3sgte, because it's made to hold boost blah blah. But it really depends on how well the individual engine was maintained. If you do the 5sfte right, it can be reliable.

You can do anything to your car but you'll have to be precise in building it. but most important thing imo is tuning it right. It doesnt matter if it's a 5s block or a 3s block. Even most of the guys at ATS are using 5s block and crank with a 3s head. In order to have it running optimally you would want an EMS system or a piggyback to control everything correctly.

and don't go cheap.
