guys i'm rebuilding my 1996 GT. I want a stock rebuild but i want to port/polish the head and get a header with matching flow characteristics...what else can I do to see any improvements without serious big money parts? forged or stock replacement pistons?? i don't really plan on any big gains so should I just go stock piston replacement? What about cams? Chip? Tuner? Is it worth it to balance and micropolish the crank?
What is the average stock rebuild cost? Guys...thanks! |

It depends on how much HP your expecting...
+20-30 hp I recomend you stick with stock internals. To get a decent ammount of HP you can get cams regrind, port/polish, and header/exhaust. anything more you will need to add a turbo. |

Dustin had web cams installed and made some decent power. You know how we get that major dip by 5000 rpm? Yeah well you won't get that dip and will keep making power. Well I don't know about how major that dip is for you at 5k but my 5sfe is horrible.

I'm looking at some head work, inverted dome top pistons, and boring the cylinders all for more compression. I guess I'll have to find a matching header and go from there. I already have a 90 eagle talon awd tsi all built up pushing over 300 horses, I just want this celica to be strong AND dependable. How much does it cost on the average for a standard rebuild on the 5sfe?? |

so I think I will go with the stock internal rebuild BUT I will port/polish the head and get a nice header set. Here's the question...how much is the port/polish going to be AND what do these celicas like to run for headers??
Just out of curiosity...what can I do to my cams for more power and if I beef them up, what brand and intake/exhaust and do I have to upgrade my fuel management...injectors, fuel pump, fpr and here's the big question...do i have to uprade my head internals?? My goal for cams is something a little more street aggressive but WITHOUT having to upgrade the fuel mgt or head internals. |

I wouldn't suggest boring the cylinders. I may be wrong but the walls on a 5S are too thin to grind out otherwise you'll compromise the structural integrity and blow your motor with one good romp.

I was also considering this exact topic the other day, and i can't believe i stumbled across a thread with a couple others already talkin about it. So yes, as lipweb was asking, how much money would it approximately cost if we were to bring our motor to a shop and get it rebuilt? And I was also considering boring my cylinders, but as I just read the last post..guess i shouldn't ...and where can I find some web cams that Dustin has? I read that thread about them, such impressive gains and no power loss at 5k rpm...i hate that on my 5s motor, 3rd gear feels like i'm practically dragging the car to move it's ass

Unless you want to stay 5s and stay NA do the rebuild. But if you have the money for a rebuild and want some power, why not consider doing a v6 swap? Better yet a 3s swap if you like boost.

What if I have to rebuild it and they bore and hone it for the new pistons? Is that going to be ok? |

I'm just doing this one for the gas mileage and safe dependability. I'm not looking for some nasty power, I got my talon for that eh heh heh...but these celicas are pretty fun to drive, I was instantly drawn to it when I first drove it. Talon's got hks cams 264/272...forged pistons...port/polish/shaved head...big 16g turbo...rechipped ecu and dsmlink tuned...balanced/polished crank and acl rod/main bearings...shaved/bored block...full exhaust 2.5" front to back with 3" muffler...K&N intake...750cc fuel injectors...etc, etc... |

Well i just went to my mechanic friend and asked him about rebuilding my 5s motor, he said he'd also be re-grinding the cams for me to and then have to take the motor to a machine shop so they can rebuild it and everything, and he quoted me a price of 7-800...which i dont think is bad at all because my friend with a civic motor, took apart his motor himself and had to bring it to a shop to get it all put back together and got charged 500.
And to any of you who are looking for more power gains w/o turbo, may I suggest sending in your camshafts to WebCam, and getting them grinded like Dustin did. Heard it's like a 20+hp increase and you dont lose power at 5k rpm and good for high compression pistons Once again, with the prices I just threw at you, I could easily pick up a 3sgte in Toronto for that amount of price.
