Hi.

I've just brought a 94 GT, UK import. This is my second Celica but this is an automatic.

Anyway, I opened her up last night but in overdrive it would reach about 90mph and then it felt like it was searching for a higher gear, basically it was revving highly for a couple of seconds and then the rev's would drop, this just continued whilst I was trying to accelerate but it would go no faster than 90mph.

I tried it with the overdrive off this morning and again it accelerated up to 85mph but again didn't change. The revs were 5500 at this point.

At lower speeds it changes gear fine.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please.

Thanks.

with overdrive on you're working with 4 gears, with it off you're basically using only 3 gears. the ECT determines where to shift by your throttle percentage, if you're flooring it the gears will change later in the RPM band, if you're just driving around the city it'll change where it normally does.

it's weird but the 6th gen auto trans will go right up until about 90mph before it seems to just stop, it will keep going after that but very very slowly.

in summary, automatics are weird, just swap to a standard wink.gif

where is it imported from? If its originally from japan, there is a 180km/h (= 105mph) Overall speedlimit.
Maybe in a N/A Celica it just is on 90mph?

just a thought.

Its imported from Japan.

Thanks for the replies as well.

How hard a job is it to overide the limiter or adjust the gear change ratios ?

In most cases of an auto tranny not shifting, it's simply a bad tranny.

I'm going with a bad tranny on this one too, unless it is that weird JDM 180 km/h limiter

I know performance chips allow you to bypass the rev limiter and change the RPM gear limits. Hypertech makes one but those are typically for domestic rides...maybe it might work for you...about $300.00

turn off OD if you're doing a top speed run, it should be able to tach out 3rd gear or hit the speed limiter. my puny little 7afe will turn the speedo to its end in 3rd no problem, but in 4th it struggles to get to 100.
