guys...
Has anybody considered building their own turbo, part by part, instead of getting the entire kit. |

Charlie has done it as well, and right now he's selling all of his turbo stuff so that he can sell his car. Also, a few other people have custom turbo setups. A few of them are listed below.

It all depends on what you get, how much boost you plan on running, whether or not you're upgrading internals, etc. If you tell us what you're thinking about more specifically, we can probably help you out a lot more. -------------------- New Toyota project coming soon...

i am not looking to change the internals of the engine...i am looking for the least modifications to the engine...preferably zero...i have not idea of the rest...however i would look for the max gain without touching the engine.

Without modifying your internals, I'd imagine that you could run 5-6 psi reliably on your engine, assuming that it runs fine now and has no problems. I'm not exactly sure on how much power you'd gain though, but I'm sure that someone can help you out.

What you need is the fallowing:
3sgte exhaust manifold $70 ct 26 turbo charger $180 3sgte stock down pipe $40 4 supra 7mge injectors $40 3sgte oilpan and oil return line $60 2 custom coolent lines $30 oil feed line $40 denso ik22 spark plugs regapped to 3sgte gap (the gap is a must!!!!! you will detonate at 5psi if not) $40 Thats about it. You will have to mate the DP and exhaust at a shop. This should be weekend install if not less and should net you 8-9 psi max if you skip the intercooler and around 180 hp to the wheels. Turbo kit for under $600 -Bryan- This post has been edited by 1bwilson: Aug 22, 2003 - 7:00 PM -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe

nicely put bryan. plus all that stuff from the 3sgte, if you can't find it, u can get stuff just like it custom made, but it'll prolly be cheaper just to find it.

if your maybe getting parts from a 7mge supra, you might want to also gank the intercooler, an intercooler is a nice touch for your turbo kit, get some custom piping done, should be relatively inexpensive, if you feel like doing it yourself, just get some hose clamps and various u bends and other pipes
try to keep your piping about 2 inches in diameter, this will help for better throtle response. as far as performence expectations, at about 8 or 9 psi, your performance should be up to par with a mustang gt or gst/tsi dsm, at least at boost on the highway. with this particular turbo setup, you should gain between 9 and 11 hp for each psi but along with your custom piping, your going to want to weld on a flange for a BOV and then add the BOV of your choice. also, you will need some kind of custom exhaust, you can go with the greddy, it will work with your setup. the diameter of the greddy is about 2.46 inches I would recommend going as high as 3 inches, back pressure is not a problem on a turbo car, so you could go with the greddy or you can go custom I recommend custom(its cheaper) but make sure you get mandrel bends but like I said, read west minst's posts, its really good info, because it goes deep into other options you can go for to help your car handle the extra power(i.e. suspension mods for better launches) good luck with whatever you decide to do, if you want to talk about it IM me at dawoodro02 or just pm me later --------------------

Nice jay!
If 7 or 8 psi is your goal then you can get out of needing an intercooler. Anything more than that you need some way of cooling the air or you will heat soak very quickly. -------------------- Member of Team 5sfTe

I plan to do this over a month or max 2, part by part... Do you think i can first start with installing the 3sgte exhaust manifold and 3sgte stock down pipe.... I have a magnaflow straight thru muffler currently installed, can i re-use it.. what is the diameter of the 3sgte stock down pipe... Again, thanx guys.... |

Well the manifold and DP will not work with out the turbo and the daul exhaust is all up to you. The less back pressure the better on a turbo car.

The 3sgte stuff allows you to use a turbo. Your current exhaust does not. I would recomend you do alot of research before you get anywhere near starting this project. I spent a full year reasearching and another gathering parts and I still have run into several things I didn't even see comming. Best thing to do is start here and do a search for west minist's post "DIY turbo kit"
