Hi, I have a little test that I want you to perform on your engine. I want to do it for my personal knowledge, but I will share it with everyone else on this board or on other forum.
I want you to take a timing light, hook it to your engine and note the where is your timing where the engine is idling. Here's the steps to perform the test : 1- Start your engine and let it reach the normal running coolant temp (about 190°F). 2- When the engine is hot, hook up a timing light to the cyl #1 spark plug wire. DO NOT BRIDGE ANY TERMINAL IN THE DIAGNOSIS PORT. 3- Aim the crank pulley and notice what is the timing that the timing light is showing (It may be difficult because there is not a lot of timing reference (the reference is from 20° BTDC to 5° ATDC). I think that the timing should be between 15-25° BTDC. 4- Note what is the current RPM (your idle RPM). 5- If you have an aftermarket boost gauge, note what is the vaccum value when your engine is idling (it should be close of 19 in-hg vaccum) Post your value on this thread. This will be very helpful for me and for other people who are trying to build an ignition advance table on their Engine Management system. Thanks in advance! I just need an approximation. I want to know if its more near 20 degrees or near 15 degrees. Dont forget to look at your RPM at idle and at your in/hg number on your boost gauge. Do this when engine is at operating temp plz. Thanks a lot!! Sam |

Sam I did attempt to try..the tools for the job are next to the door...unfortunately living in the UK it has a nasty habit of raining just when you want to work on the car and guess what...the worst storms in many years have payed us a visit...it done nothing but rain all weekend...I might have time on wednesday, if not I`ll do it on friday...I have not forgotten. |

I'm sry if i'm not very patient. Here in Canada, this was the biggest snow storm in 40 years this weekend. We received 2 feet of snow within 10 hours. Anyway, I know what you're talking about when you say working on your car when its raining. I'm waiting your news! Thanks again Sam |

I dont have the tools and my tach meter is not hooked up. I can say that from sound of it my 3rg gen is idling at about 2K rpm. I do have greddy prospec 2 err whatever its called boost controller thing. I also have sprecter EMS all installed by xat racing. My car takes 3 times to start and or I have to keep pumping gas pedal first 20 ish seconds for it not to stall. It just does not like to start at all. When it runs it looks like it runs at about 2000 rpm having a very sexy growl sound. my boost meter reads 58-60 and i think its x100. I do assume normal boost level is around 5-6 even at highway speeds. When I step on gas i seem my gause go as high as 11-12 lbs of boost.

well at idle my boost guage reads about 16 in/hg. but i have large cams and therefore have less vacuum at idle then a stocker.

i dont want cam timing, I want ignition advance at idle. This can be seen with a timing light when the engine is idling. But DO NOT BRIDGE ANY TERMINAL IN THE DIAGNOSIS PORT. I want the realtime ignition advance, not the base ignition advance that is normally 10 degree BTDC.

OK I finally got around to doing this for you...sorry for the delay...but as your request, with the engine warm and nothing bridged the timing gun shows that the timing is pretty steady on 10deg but it does fluctuate a little...never more than 10 deg but it does go up and down between 9 and 10deg...very occasionally getting as far as 8 deg. But it only did tat once or twice in the full ten mins I was checking the timing for.

Believe it or not I was working with my friend who is a Toyota Tech at a local dealership on my timing [genII motor] and the BGB he brought up at his terminal said to set the base timing at 10* but after removing the jumper the normal at temp would be between 13* and 21* BTDC at idle. I didn't believe it and had to take a second look but it was right there for all techs to see. IDK - seemed too advanced to me. between 13 and 21 degree of advance at idle is correct. For now, I'm at 19 @ 1100 RM @ 19in-hg vaccum and my idle is pretty rock solid. Thanks a lot guys for all that info!
