search the forums, this has been covered many many many times

NGK & do your wires, cap rotor and air filter too. Follow the wires going to the top of your engine, the rubber things come out (those are your spark plug wires), beneath those are your plugs. You'll need a special socket to get them out. The plastic thing on the other end of the wires is the distributor cap. When removed (3 screws) there's a little T shaped thingie you'll see, that's the rotor. Replace these.

Most importantly, note EXACTLY which wire came off of which spot on each end, they MUST be put back in the same order or your car will misfire and run like crap.

Go purchase a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car. Or, seriously no joke, get a book called Idiot's Guide to Car Maintenance. I bought it when I got my first car a million years ago. It's a great layman's introduction to car maintenance. You can even buy mine off me for a nominal fee. smile.gif

She's got it right.

A word of caution, if you've never done spark plugs you need to be careful reinstalling them.
DON'T, DON'T, DON'T force the threads, start the plugs by hand [stick in the socket, attach extension to socket and thread in until they're snug. If they won't thread, it's lined up wrong [or the thread is already damaged].

Also, check the gap before you install the plugs and use a small bit of antisieze on the threads, aluminum and steel like to "lock" together.

I've got NGK iridium IX spark plugs, but some ppl have went jdm and went with the denso iridium spark plugs, i'm not too sure if there are any performance differences between the two but i'm planning to change out my spark plug wires.
Any suggestions guys? should i go for nology hotwires, or trd spark plug wires?

take pictures of your progress on projects. find a motor head friend and see if they can help you get into cars.

seems like you are just beginning, im sure someday you'll hopefully look back at this and get a warm n fuzzy feeling =)

also... have your friend only help you with it, that way wit you actually doing it, you will learn alot more

My god - for the last time Denso and NGK are the same company . And there is no reason to use anything other than these two names on your Toyota - they work great, they are OEM.
The choice between platinum and iridium will have to be your own - just make sure the guy at the parts counter doesn't talk you out of these brand names and you'll be cool.

you can use a regular socket but the plug socket is not only the correct depth, it has that nifty rubber ring so it holds onto the plugs when you go to pull 'em out, and you don't drop them when you're putting them back in.

Sage advice from alltracman, doing plugs is one of those things that's super easy and it's easy to forget to mention those details! It's SUPER important that you use a little anti-seize on the threads, and screw them in by hand and use the handle for tightening. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN them though!

And really, really, really - get new plug wires (also called ignition wires), cap & rotor and do it all up at once. These things wear out just like the plugs do. It's almost worthless to do the plugs and not the others. Search Amazon for the NGK wires; I got mine for forty bucks, (of course brand new) which is the same as the cheap nasty wires in parts stores, and about twenty bucks less than they charge for the NGKs in-store.

Denso are owned by Toyota and NGK are publicly owned...seeming to indicate that Bitter is indeed the winner of the internets
