i did my back brakes and now im doing the front.. im just trying to get rid of the screw so i can slide the caliper up and replace the brakes for now but the screw islike different for both sides which way to i unscrew on the passenger side? do i pull up or do i push down to unscrew it? same for the driver side.

[/size]

i went both ways on the passenger side i pulled up and i even broke the ratchet thing, so i started pushing down on it but its not budging... and i dont want to go full strength and break some more..

If your question is about swinging the calipers out of the way to put in pads, then to loosen the bolt you have to turn it counterclockwise. I hope I'm getting your question right.
good luck.
Also if the bolt is stuck or hard to turn, use PB blaster on it or a wrench with good leverage.

If removing caliper......bleed brakes...otherwise you would have to put pressure back to the valve that pushes the circular tube enforcing the brakes to bite the rotor......I always use a c-clamp to push it in to easily put the caliper back on....and then pump the brakes after installment....dunno but just might be me...

Fine you win. Yes you need a stronger attatchment.

with the socket on the bolt (behind the caliper) on the passenger side, pulling up tightens it.. you're supposed to pull down.

just wondering, did you break the ratchet? or the socket.. more likely the rotating end of the ratchet is what will shear right off from over-torquing. anyway, i hope you have a good branded ratchet that has lifetime warranty. and i hope you're not using a small 1/2" ratchet, you should be using at least a 3/4".

Very true.

IMO breaking things is one of the best ways to learn, makes it stick in your mind. smile.gif

I've got a lot of mistakes behind me on the trail. biggrin.gif

The way I always remembered was loosening is counterclockwise [facing what you're loosening] and tightening is clockwise.
