When I near the top end of the acceleration curve in my '97 GT (5sfe engine) I hear a kind of high-pitched whistle. It's not a squeal, like a belt noise, but similarly pitched. The thing is, it's done this for several months, with no apparent drop in performance or any other negative effects that I've noticed. I will be visiting my local Toyota specialist in the next couple of weeks for a few minor items that I just don't have the time/patience to manage and I'll mention it to them (big shout out to Japanese Auto Masters, Va Beach ), but I got to thinking about this the other day and just wondered if anyone here has experienced anything like this. Thanks.

I believe someone else on here experienced this and was advised to check for any cracks or small leaks in their intake tubing (assuming yours is stock, I haven't looked at your profile).
I had a 4Runner that did that, but only at and over 60mph, and only with my foot on the gas pedal. I never figured out what it was, but intake sounds about right since the throttle body would be open when this occurred. It didn't seem to affect the performance or functionality of my car whatsoever. -------------------- |

Yeah, that's exactly it - like a dinky little supercharger. Nice description. Also, thanks, GriffGirl for the tip. My 4Runner never did make a noise like this one - at least none that I could hear over all of the other noises that it made

So what exactly did you have done to correct it? I did a quick check on mine this morning and actually found a pretty good size crack in the breather hose. It seems that would be too big to create a whistle, but it might be the culprit. Are there any other places in particular I should check? How about gaskets? Thanks again.

Cool, man. That's an easy fix (oh, crap - I hope I didn't just jinx myself). Thanks for the info.

Finally got my breather hose and found time to put it in. Worked like a charm. Not only did it eliminate the tiny turbo noise, but my engine just feels more solid. Thanks for the heads up!
