Got my usual oil change today and I was told that my oil was really low. I asked if it had a leak and they said there's a very slow one not coming from any lines or anything, but oil is on the bottom of the engine. Any others have problems like this? Any suggestions/solutions before I take it to a toyota specific shop?

Our cars are known to leak from the front seals. That could be yor problem, because thats the problem I had. See I don't know the correct term for the front seal, its just what my dad called it and the shop also called it too.

knowing that, i'd jack it up, get it on stands, and with the brightest flashlight you got, Try to find the point of origin. That way, you know what it is, or we could tell you with provided pictures.

A very common thing to go are the front and rear main seals (the seals around the crank). Look at your CV boots and see if they have oil on them. Also, check the inside of your front rims for oil. Usually once main seals start to leak, it will be a slow leak until you change them. I'd make it a good habbit to start checking your oil every time you fill up or every Sunday...whichever comes first. Start looking from the bottom of the oil pan and move up slowly to see where the oil stops...that should give you an idea of what may be going.
Another thing you can do is push down on your dip stick holder...those can come loose. |

I know where the rear one is, inside the cluthc but not the other one -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... On a high mileage 5S, anywhere.
I don't believe the 96 got the better HG yet, so from the top Valve cover gasket Dist Cam seals Head Gasket Front main seal [basically in the oil pump]. Oil pump Rear main seal Oil pan If it's not enough to leave drips on your parking spot it's probably not that bad a leak. You could have burned the oil as well. -------------------- |

Still got good oil pressure? Some shops can put a harmless dye in the oil and then pretty quickly locate the leak.

Oil pressure is still good, everything is running fine. That's why it was such a surprise. I do notice I have a couple oil spots where I park at night but definately not a pool. |

You clean up the oil on your engine. put the stuff in the crank case, drive it for a while then jack it up and use a black light to see where the oil is coming out of works pretty well actually -------------------- The question is not how far. I brought your suggestions in and got it checked out...
Apparrently a LOT of stuff went bad. Valve Cover Gasket, Cam Seal, Distributor O Rings, Oil Pump, Crank Seal, Oil Pan Gasket. Anyone need a kidney? |

Just make sure you aren't getting hosed and they are replacing every seal that holds oil in the engine.

had my leak from the valve cover gasket. it turns out the people who did the tune up didnt tighten it all the way and i could literally loosen it with my fingers
