i was reading the 4age and 4agze posts and it says the 4age is used more for racing applications and the 4agze more for street driving...my question is why? do race teams turbo the 4age? or do they just beef up the internals so much that it produces insane amounts of power while staying NA. im just curious more than anything...not planning on swapping (i have a gt-but mostly funds)
thanks

The 4AGE is a small displacement motor, try as you may, it is very hard to make a lot of torque with asmall motor. 4AGEs were meant to rev, and rev they do. Almost all their power and peak torque comes in at a very high RPM. Something 5SFE cannot do. What is different between the 4AGE and 4AGZE is the addition of a supercharger. A Roots type Supercharger to be exact. This unit helps the little motor make a good amount of torque in th elow end, which is why it is a better choice for daily driving. Either way, these motors are pretty strong. the 4AGZE's supercharger is usually taken off by many race teams and a turbo slapped on, because the internals are stronger then a regular 4AGE. The TRD Atlantic motor is an NA version of the 4AGE, and is rumored to produce 210+BHP from 1.6L without variable valve timing.

so if you have the supercharger on...do you lose the higher end power of the 4age? and when we are talking about race teams are we saying rally teams or some other form of racing...is a turboed 4age kinda considered a hybrid motor?

b/c very few race teams are going to have a n/a motor?...right?

you can make low end torque by turbo'ing a 4agze which is what a lot of people are doing due to the restriction that the SC12 supercharger begins to become on a 4agze. either turbo'ing & removing the s/c or going to a SC14 off a previa which requires a lot of custom pipe work to get it to fit.

you don't lose top end with a 4agze - we've taken it up to 6500rpm & the motor still had legs to keep going, it's just different than say a high comp 4age.
there's nothing wrong with a 4age for daily driving - it just depends how much your car weighs - think of the cars it originally came in - a MKI MR2, AE86 here & overseas the AE101 & AE111 Corollas.
putting a n/a 4age in a Celica wouldn't feel that great due to the weight of the car - this is where the torque of the s/c moves the heavier Celica & makes it feel peppier & pull harder etc.

the n/a 4age was used for years in the TRD Atlantic racing series - long after the motor was out of production cars.
google for it & you can read all the specs etc.

and btw you can't compare a 4age to a 5sfe - 2 totally different motor families all together - compare a 5sfe to its turbo'd cousin the 3sgte.

so first of all what do you mean when you say its different than a higher comp 4age...how? what were the 4age's originally put in for racing? and when you talk about turboing the 4agze, these teams would remove the supercharger...not have both? i've heard of some guys having both superchargers and turbos for quick boost and then higher boost numbers....so how come coomer and others would put a 4age in as opposed to the 4agze? and is a 4agze just a supercharged 4age...b/c i know the 3sgte is not at all the same as a 3sge.

let me know if this makes sense i may not be asking the right questions...
thanks

p.s.-i'll read up on it...i just think its interesting
