So before i got the celica (puma cubed) i had this badass VW passat (puma squared) that I LOVED. It was a '94 vr6 GLX. Ugly as hell but a legend around my neighborhood. Anyway i had a twin loop muffler installed and it sounded awesome. VR6 engine + twin loop catback = pure sex. my question is whether a 5sfe would respond well to a twin loop too. I know its not the best flow but its a less obnoxious exhaust and some back pressure is actually good for performance.

my other question involves the cold air intake im about to finish. So far I only have a short ram w/o a heatshield but i will be running to the fender within the week. Just how much will this do for my engine? will it feel exactly the same as my short ram or will I actually get a benefit? response? peppier? more torque???

Sorry bro. But I highly doubt you will feel any difference. Its a good idea to route the piping to the fender to keep it away from the engine heat, but will you feel any difference? Not really. Its just the fact that the 5sfe was made to be economy friendly, not for performance.

The CAI will not do much for you except give you a longer throttle response. As far as HP gain its going to be the same whether you go with the ram air, CAI, or even a drop in K&N filter with your stock air box.

honestly i had a CAI and just the K&N cone on my intake, although the CAI sounded like a pissed off 7A, the cone directly on the intake had a lot more throttle response. just my experience on my 7AFE

Personally, anything that downs performance: in order to fake performance (Make Noise)... I highly recommend against.

But that's all IMO so do as you'd like...

it has hoses at the end of an exhaust (usually in the muffler), to go back into your exhaust farther upstream. It's retarded. Just another method of "Coffee Caning"

wow sorry i asked, really don't appreciate the ricer remarks...

as for being retarded, twin loop exhaust were created to maintain a good flow while being alot quieter than other muffler styles. I had one, and it did exactly that. The only thing was that it was on a v6 and not a 4 cylinder, so i just wanted to know how a 5sfe would pair up with it.

no no! Wait~ dont misunderstand...

I'm not calling you retarded, nor ricer! (lol, i'm the last person to call someone else out tongue.gif ) But really, the only application i've ever seen them applied was to civics and lancers for volume increase. It just recycles back pressure & exhaust after the prime cat. confused.gif i just dont understand the point of it.

As for the SRI; it's not even a noticeable difference. Really it helped me, but half of my air intake box was gone when i bough the car. It just got it up to stock for me laugh.gif But that's because i bought a totaled Celica biggrin.gif

CAI you might find a few horses in... like 3-5? idk, i dont have CAI. some people have reported 12HP increase, but i dont believe it's possible. nor does anyone else except for these 2-3 people who have reported the 12hp increase...

CAI paired with independent headers and higher flow cats + 2.5-3 inch all the way back should squeeze you a few horses. Paired with better plugs you might get 12-15... MAYBE?! just a guess... but adding up all of these things together equals that...

Good luck with that.

(IMO, i have a 5sfe, DD style, and i'm still going turbo wink.gif but that's the route i want to take. Otherwise, N/A will never get much with the shear tinyness of our engines. 2j swap maybe?)

bolt on mods don't do much for our cars---our cars aren't like honda's which were made to be mod-friendly. Only thing to give noticeable power is getting your cams regrinded, or turbo----or you swap out ur motor for a 3s motor.

My experience has been with both drop-in, modifying stock box, short ram, CAI and Ram air intakes on the 5sfe. It terms of butt dyno the power gains go from least to most

By the butt/feel dyno the power diff you will notice is miniscule between CAI and SRI - the BIG thing you will notice is heatsoak/sluggishness off the line between SRI and CAI. SRI in my experience is more sluggish off the line until air gets flowing through the engine bay whereas the CAI has less of a sluggish response. (CAI only has to clear warm air in tube to get rid of sluggishness. Ram air works quite well though off the line response is less than SRI/CAI once you get some air flowing it really starts to shine.

In regards to to the exhaust I went with a straight exhaust with race muffler 2.5" - this was too big with the 5s as alot of low end torque was sacrificed for minimal gains up top. I think 2.5" exhaust with the twin loop would be a much better setup without the ricer fart can sound - though twin loops sound a little strained at the upper rpm range.

With the reground cams you will lose the low end torque of the 5sfe and move it farter up into the mid rpm range - great improvement in 3rd gear.

Though as with any info given on forumns - take it with a grain of salt as alot of misinformation is given - I am only providing you a description of my experience.

heatsoak is what i was thinking too since my short ram piping gets really really hot after a highway run. I tried a heatshield made from ACE hardware sheet metal but but all it did was look good. I guess heatsoak also explains why the engine feels more lively in the morning so maybe a cold air is worth it.

You guys should really check out twin loops. they offer great flow and run much quieter than standard tube type exhausts. there are alot of knockoffs that do the opposite, but the original Mugens are awesome. I might pick one up at advance just to try it out before returning it (one of the benefits of working there XD ) ill post a video if i do.

yeah, that's the prob with the metal heat shields... they heat up and are worthless kindasad.gif Although they do make some out of ABS or something, that give that nice pretty engine looks, and retard the heat smile.gif

As for twin loops, Go ahead and nab one. I'd be interested to see what kind of gains you get out of it. Maybe that'd be a new route for N/A guys to take. I'm sure they'd love some more options biggrin.gif

I dont think you can change your name... Maybe in "My Controls" but if it aint there... then your kinda SOL untill you make a new acct. Or ask Coomer, rather he'd know, or you can get a new name; and he can delete the old one to save server space. wink.gif
