Well my motor finally bit the dust after 279,000 miles. Any advice/words of caution or things to avoid when pulling the engine? I'm just swapping in another 5sfe. I have a Haynes manual, and so far have removed:

strut brace
battery
cruise control
evap canister
and drained the oil

It's been simple, thanks to the step-by-step guide in the Haynes book, but thought I would ask you guys anyways.

Thanks

i honestly never used that book for anything more than torque specs and CEL codes.
but whenever i pull an engine i ALWAYS drain EVERY SINGLE FLUID that i can. power steering, oil, water, tranny fluid. then i disconnect the wiring harness (toyota has to be from the ecu/body plugs) and then remove the air cleaner assy. then everything from behind the engine(heater, PS lines, fuel, fuel return, vac lines...) then the front of the engine. and the sides... then i look around the whole engine, front back and sides, then under the engine, to make sure i didnt forget anything. i usually take off the brake master cyl to get a lttle extra room. then i hook it up to an engine hoist. make sure you have a lot of slack on the tranny side so it will come out without too many issues. support the engine with the hoist, then disconnect the engine mounts and finally start pulling it out.

some things to make sure you've done:
1. shift cables, on the back of the engine if its a 5spd and thte front if it a auto
2. clutch lines, of course only if its a manual
3. leave a lot of slack on the trannny side with whatever you may use to lift it out otherwise it'l be a btch to get out
4. on the drivers mount, i found it much easier to remove the mount from the tranny AND the body.
5. please remember to disconnect the exhaust lol. i usually take thet manifold off completely (from the engine and the rest of the exhaust)
6. if you leave the radiator in, watch the front mount. it likes to try to dig into the radiator. i took the mount and bracket off completely for this reaon
7. remove the fuel filter/evap canister and brackets. again for more room to work with

Thanks for the reply, Stephen! It is a 5 speed, for reference. Any other tips from people that have taken out their 5sfe's?

if your just swapping in another 5s...i think itd b easier out the bottom...you can remove the entire suspension and motor and cradle at 1 time...swap the motor and bolt it back in...a lot faster and a lot less stuff to disconect. IMO

I took mine out the bottom, guess it was easyer but you have to get the car way up in the air and thats not a safe idea without proper equipment.

when taking the cluch master out, dont disconect the line, just take the unit out and unbult any mounts to it or the line and hold out of the way.

I would take the entire exhaust off from the engine to the rear motor mout/exhaust mount gives you more wiggle room with it not in the frunt.

thing to note my repair manual (not sure what brand but the standard smucks one] was wrong about the fireing order it listed [4,3,2,1 - distributor] when its really [1,2,3,4 - dist]

take your time, be carefull with the connectors I smashed 2 in the corse of my swap, and there not always easy to find in yards. map out the vacume lines because some manuals dont really give you a good enough diagram of how it works, I took a label maker and labeld both ends and the tube of each line maybe a little overkill but saved some time and had no confusion.

also there are plenty of things you dont have to take out to remove the motor, all that needs to go is whats directly in the way and the motor itself, did you removed the whole cruse controll? i left mine just took off the cable to it and pulled out of the way.
