I need a valve that only opens when the throttle is fully engaged (hard acceleration) but stays closed then idling/cruising.

seems interesting

why do you need this valve?

Here's what I want to do:

BTW, this isn't a picture of my celica engine bay but it's shows you what I'm trying to achieve. Basically, it's a "two-stage" air intake system, where one air filter is always open and the second one only opens when you need it. The valve would be used control the air flow, limiting the volume but increasing velocity when engine demand is lower but increasing volume when demand is high.

thats a good idea, but i thinks you wont see gains that your expecting
unless you take this idea further, into the intake manifold

but toyota has already done this. i believe its called TVIS

Yup, that's what Derrick told me too (about the TVIS).

So I see that it was used on the 4AGE and the 3SGE...wondering if it would work on a 7AFE... And what exactly is this TVIS?

On a separate (but related note), it seems that for better low end torque, a longer and narrower intake path is better than a fat short one (due to higher velocity). So...

Would something like this out perform a standard intake system?

that idea will still flow at the same speed unless some are closed at lower RPMs

but since its just an intake, i think most of that speed will be stopped by the throttle plate.

so what you would basically like to do is split up the runner in a way to basically have one side closed for velocity then open the other "butter-fly" to allow more volume, right?
very rough but is this somewhat what you mean?

if so -they do have this for the 7afe.
I have the head and intake I will try and post pictures tomorrow.

all those pipes will = more weight, resistance and turbulence than one larger intake with a single filter.
just not practical imo. least restriction is what you want always on an intake. longer or shorter doesn't matter, as soon as the air is in the manifold all your piping is nun and void. you just want fresh air.

Can't. He would need to obtain a 20V head or get an adapter made up to mate the ITB's to the 7A head, then he would need engine management, tuning, etc.

All of that for ITB's? Might as well buy a 20V and drop it in.

..... and they are AWESOME!

do you mean something like this, and also runner length does affect power and rpm range.

97 and up preludes had this exact same set up on their air intake boxes. the valve worked similar to an external waste gate on the turbo.

on another note the idea i had before was with a switch and solenoid which would be activated when the throttle cable attachment to the TB was pulled to the max... using an edge off the pulley to hit the switch which would activate the solenoid.

on the intake manifold that I had posted pictures of I believe that the second set of runners are closed under engine vacuum and when there is no vacuum the second set of runners are allowed to fully open.
so basically when you are at idle(engine vacuum) the second set is closed and as you press the throttle the the second sets opens as it gets closer to "0" vacuum(WOT)

This is not quite open ONLY at wide open throttle but could possibly be ran to some sort of vacuum switch to control it.

And also this is a 7AFE manifold and head incase someone did not know.
